American girl doll props?

Postby neato » Thu May 30, 2013 5:54 pm

Sorry if this is well-known information or already been discussed before, but, I'm trying to get some props for my dolls. Is American Girl furniture and props a good fit for SDs? I live in the boonies so no stores here where I can compare.

If not American girl, are there any other doll props that work ok?

While the furniture is a better fit for minis, the some of props, like the musical instruments, fit SDs better. Try to see if you can find measurements on the websites that sell them and measure that against your doll. That's what I do to figure out if a prop is too big or small.

Depends on the size of your SD LOL. I have the red and chrome table set (Molly's Table I think) and my 60cm obitsu can sit at it well but it fits my 50cm obitsu as if it had been made for them! Things like laptops work great for SD and smaller. Feel free to ask about specific props as you'll probably discover many people have some and will be happy to describe them.

I used to have the old fashioned typewriter and it was perfect for SDs, but I ended up selling it as I wasn't using it and knew someone else would want it :)

I have some after market (non american girl branded) stuff sold for 18" dolls. Violin, suitcase, umbrella all from Necessary Extras, a web site. The violin is OK for 58 - 60 cm. (all I have to try it on). the suitcase is a little small and is very cheap looking. The umbrella is OK, but the handle is too large in proportion to the rest of the umbrella. I'm thinking of trying to take/scrape/melt off the plastic handle part and making a different handle.

I was very excited to see a lot of miniature pink depression ware on The Doll Hospital (another web site) and very unhappy when I found that it was all unavailable. I did get a nice set of knife, fork and spoon there.

The most useful thing I did when hunting props was to go around the house measuring common things: utensils, plates, furniture, and then dividing by 3 to figure out a good size for my SDs.

Happy hunting!

Target has their own brand of American GIrl knock-offs, the furnishings are better suited for my MSD dolls, the props aren't in a particular scale so it's personal taste. Target prices are much more reasonable than official AG and they look pretty good.

Jo Ann and Michaels stores carry knock-offs as well but much less stuff. I discovered novelty compacts and mirrors that look like computers fit dolls well.

Are there particular items you're looking for?
