Coincidences, doll names that stick, and a China Girl

Postby WhiteDove01s » Fri Jul 26, 2013 7:59 am

So, I have a little 3" China Girl - the character from that new Oz movie I'm not likely to see any time soon. It felt a bit awkward to keep just calling her 'china', even though I still haven't properly named the DUM droids, so I went looking to see if she actually had a name.

Apparently not. They didn't bother to give one of the movie's main characters an actual name. Ooops.

So I started wondering if I should do something about that. It's kind of awkward, because I guess they could always throw up some bit of extended canon later and make things weird - but then, Disney's off-canon to the books anyway, so I could just claim mine's from a different continuity stream... XD

I went and looked up the voice actor's name, to see if it sparked any ideas. Joey King, btw. Then I grabbed the Baby Name Book I keep on hand for such things and looked in the girl's names for any of them beginning with 'Jo' and therefore possibly connected to Joey as a nickname - even though I can't see calling the China Girl that, it just seems too modern.

There's a good page of those in this book. Most were variations on Josephine or Jocelyn, and didn't really sound like a name for someone from Oz. So I started checking meanings on the odder ones, and found this:

Jovanna (Latin) 'Majestic'

I refer you back to the last name of the voice actor.

So, what do the rest of you think? I'm about half-decided, and am thinking I should wait and see if it sticks, but other opinions help. :)

P.S. - I still can't imagine calling her Joey, and definitely not Vanna as that makes me think of Wheel of Fortune, but...

I think it's a pretty name, but if it doesn't stick, maybe do some research and steal the name of another OZ character for her? Jinjur, Billina, Cayke, or Trot? :) (Yes, I'm re-reading the Oz books right now.)
Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

The name seems to have stuck to China Girl, just took me a couple days to get to where I could remember it right without checking the book. XD

She doesn't seem to mind any of the various possible nicknames either, but I guess that's no surprise for someone who got through a whole movie with people who didn't bother to ask her name...

I've been making a little bed for her, too. That happened because I saw some plastic toddler bowls at the grocery store for about 80-cents. I picked one up, painted it with a delft blue pattern, and have made a cushion for the inside. It's just the right size - but I still have to sew a pillow and bedsheets, and I'm plotting a teeny little quilt.

I keep telling myself it's good practice to work that small. XD

Actually in terms of the books I believe she's probably based on the China Princess of Oz and she doesn't really have any other name. They call her "Princess" as I recall throughout the book. So you could really name her anything you like.

I like the name 'Jovanna'. It's different. But as her mother you will know if it fits or not and of course, she will tell you if she doesn't like it.
