When is enough, enough?

Postby MelodyT » Fri Oct 04, 2013 3:43 am

When is enough, enough? Seriously! I find myself looking at and then wanting some of the dolls I look at. I tell myself that I don't need any more dolls, to no avail. You see, even though I certainly don't need them, I want them. Yet at some point there should surely be a cut off point... I already have 34 and am seriously considering 4 more today. What do you think? When is too many, too much!?

I've determined not to be the woman on that hoarding show with 1000 dolls so I don't count how many I have. If I don't count the breeding stock of Monster High and Power Team Elite or those I have just for my website... I literally don't know how many I have.

It's a personal thing. If your real life is in control, bills paid, and responsibilities taken care of then you have every right to any hobby that doesn't hurt you or anyone else. When you have more spiders than dolls and can't display and enjoy them how you want is a good barometer that you might have too much.

(Looks back in the corner at a pyramid of 30 gallon storage boxes....) Uh, feelings of weirdness!!! Do you know I do believe I'm halfway there probably? I just had to pack most of my dolls away for a while to kitten proof my house and I'm pretty sure I'm up to near 500 though I did not actually count them. Mind you 3/4 of them are cheap little playline dolls, many of which I bought thrift, and flea market, and to be fair I have been collecting for like 15 years, but still I think I just might have a *bit* of a doll museum thing going on at this point! Eh, I am unrepentant. I don't much care what people think on that score. It's not like I am displaying them all at once and even if I was what business would it be of anyones? It could be worse. I could be collecting dead mummified animals or something. I rarely spend $$$ on anything else actually. All the money I could be spending on things like going out, the movies, books etc, it mostly goes towards dolls. Dolls are my entertainment...

I had a friend once years ago who converted his entire basement into a show-room for his figures. There were cases lining walls, free-standing display cases in the center, and all the display cases had many levels... All crammed full, but all standing and arranged. It was rather neatly done~ Don't think I could begin to remotely tally the amount of figures, but at least in the thousands. It was a rather impressive collection and definitely a museum~

I wouldn't worry too much about what others think, as long as you're happy with it. ^_~

i would like to say when I'm reusing characters or when the characters' personality start becoming too similar to each other.... But then that doesn't always work. The 1/6ers have a way of sneaking in a buddy or 3.

Although my small collection is probably a tiny fraction of what some folks have (1/6ers, am not counting the 1/12 action figures I retired). The inablity to properly play with or display them offers some sort of weak control.

By the time I hit 1/3, I realised 3 of them are upsize or amalgam personalities and only one is technically a new character ported over from the plushie side(lets not go there) of things.

Some very interesting points raised. Alas, I can't be too worried about it as I went ahead and bought those dolls, eh, actually, 5 of them instead of 4. :D So now I have 39 dolls. My husband doesn't understand my 'obsession with dolls', as he calls it. It kinda freaks him out. Don't rightly know why, but he thinks its ridiculous at my age. I don't know that he will ever accept that hobby of mine. Thankfully I do have others that he supports wholeheartedly. Anyone else have a spouse who doesn't 'get it'?

I don't have a spouse, but have an uncle that doesn't get it. He thinks it is a waste of money. Oh well, I still have lots to get to catch up with you Melly.

Dolls are the best of both worlds, you get a small human you can fuss over that does exactly what you want them to that you can put aside without worry. I'd rather see someone with a doll instead of a kid they aren't ready for.
