How did everyone get into collecting 1/6 dolls?

Barbie, Jenny, Fashion Royalty, Obitsu and 1/6 resins - basically anything 10-12inch/21-27cm or in the neighborhood.

I place all the blame on my husband. I played with Barbies when I was younger, but I never knew anything beyond them. I wasn't the type to sit down with my Barbie's and make them walk around and talk and stuff. I spent hours setting up each of my play-sets, and then picking out a Barbie to dress up to go with that play-set. Then I'd take it all apart and put it up until next time. Hubby introduced me to anime 1/6thers through his RAH Ed Elric and Azone Ichigo Kurosaki shortly after we met (We were both into anime big time in high school). I fell in love. I love taking time to just set up a scene with all sorts of little props and accessories. I love posing and positioning everyone just right. I don't always get the pictures taken, though (I forget to put the camera batteries on charge).

We primarily collect and make 1/6th anime/video game dolls. Off the top of my head, we have: InuYasha and Kagome, Ichigo, Ed, Karren from Code Geass, Tenchi, Ryoko and Ayeka from Tenchi Muyo!, Rin Tohsaka from Fate Stay Night, Sailor Mercury, Rikku, Auron and Tidus from FFX, 2012 April O'Neil and all four TMNT, the Prince of Persia, Spike from Buffy, Venom from Marvel, Knuckles and Shadow from Sonic, AXL from MegaMan X, an old-school Mulan Barbie, Haruko and Mamimi from FLCL, and some Pokemon (Not to mention the 20+ Monster High dolls that take over periodically). There's also a die-cast 12" tall Optimus Prime that likes to police when everyone gets off the shelves. He's a full 12", but he's definitely not 1/6th scale.
And those are just the ones that are here and complete. :D I don't think I've ever sat down and listed them all. It's thanks to this forum and all the wonderful people here that I got into BJDs (I only have 1, a 1/4th RS Mei. I love her so much, but I probably won't get many more this big. Maybe 1 or 2 RS friends, 'cause I love their sculpts and colors). We come from a more action doll background (Highly articulated figures with usually sculpted hair and removable cloth clothing).

I can't say that I have an all-time favorite, since we rotate out our current fandom every little while so they don't get stale. Right now, though, it's probably April, since we've put so much work into her, and of course her Turtle brothers. :D Just got a set of the 2003 Turtles, too. But they'll need some work before their photo ready. I eventually want to get a set of '87 Turtles too.
Also, Edward Elric is a top favorite. There have been times where I've been "meh" about him. There have been times where I've hated him. But to this day I still love him and all his attitude. He started out an RAH, but Medicom's that old just aren't lasting like other companies (I blame the plastic and probably some of their old manufacturing processes). He's now been put onto an Obitsu body (boy he sure is loving his extra height), and we're going to eventually make his left leg into auto-mail (just haven't gotten around to it yet).

I have to say, not much surprises me of what can be found in 1/6th. I've seen lots of strange anime dolls (FLCL even got dolls, and there's not much zanier than that series), and there are lots of little one-offs. Probably two of my favorite "strange" 1/6thers are Asmus Toy's The Mask, and someone (Dark Horse, maybe?) made a Bruce Campbell figure. I want them both.

Shadowkat: Someone made a BRUCE CAMPBELL FIGURE? Oh man, I have such a "Burn Notice" complex and then the whole stint when he was a bit younger in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys". I can't be a proper nerd if I do not own this doll and then promptly pimp out a Michael Weston doll to go with (well, depending on what age range the Bruce doll is in. XD)

Do you showcase your work anywhere ShadowKat? Also, I'm upset to hear about the Medicom RAH stuff. I have two Roys (one is destined to become Hughes if I have to blood, sweat and toil) and I bought the 2011 movie version of Edward. There was some controversy over the heads looking different (...I am ridiculously detail oriented, and yet the subtle differences don't really bother me. My only complaint is that his scars don't quite connect to his automail which is irritating.)

A 1/6 Knuckles and Shadow from Sonic? You realize my sister would probably commit cold blooded murder to get ahold of those right? XD Although I myself am just curious to see pictures! <3

Also, Mulan barbie...you mean you made one? I'd love to see. :D This character is so neglected, recent "Once Upon A Time" drama on tumblr notwithstanding.

There's also a die-cast 12" tall Optimus Prime that likes to police when everyone gets off the shelves. He's a full 12", but he's definitely not 1/6th scale.
<---No matter how many times I read that, my mind is not getting out of the gutter. Please explain it to me like I'm not a 12 year old snickering boy on the playground that told a dirty joke.

And those are just the ones that are here and complete. :D I don't think I've ever sat down and listed them all. <---You brought up a good point (says my brain). I think the rules for a "BJD" are way too rigid. I consider my ~"fashion dolls"~ BJDs. They're jointed with balls and they're dolls. Even some of the figures like Figma use rotating ball-like joints for natural flex and movement. It doesn't have to be resin to please me. (In fact having a bunch of three foot high dolls hanging around my condo sounds like a nightmare for the space ALONE.)

I got into action dolls first too, the whole RAH, Hot Toys type deal. I regard hair as I would any other accessory: How best do I utilize it? :) If sculpting say, Hiei's hair from Yu Yu Hakusho is going to take me an hour with apoxie and five days to reroot and style a head, I may choose form over style, or style over form. Sometimes sculpted hair can just flat out achieve styles no synthetic hair could hope.

Wah, ShadowKat now I want to see your collection so bad! <3

OH! ShadowKat, I read somewhere apparently if you're willing to pay parcel that if you email Medicom nicely that they'll give your doll a free "check up", which for the customer I read about included re-attaching a broken Roy Mustang head that had snapped off right at the neck joint. :) Just as an aside if you don't want to keep moving dolls, or you're like me and like to keep as much of an "original" doll "original" as possible. Now I can kitbash the heck out of something, but I get all weird when I see someone loitering near the dolls that stay in their protective boxes. X3;;

Now you be careful on saying that about them 3foot high dolls. They have a nasty way of ambushing you when they resemble either your current 1/6 dolls or a certain Hot Toys zombie hunter with a spiffy pilot jacket who's game I never completed and am actually a fan of the little sister of the other over buff zombie hunter guy.

Judging from the pics I've seen, he might be a little young to be Sam Ax. Apparently there's an old movie of his called "My Name Is Bruce" and that's what he's from. I also found some Xena: Warrior Princess dolls that featured his name (don't know how accurate or what they actually look like. I couldn't get the pics to load). I know that Xena and Hercules did some crossover shows, so he might be the same character?

I've posted a couple of things on the board and on my tumblr. I usually don't take pictures often. In the next couple of days I'll try to get everyone down and take a couple of pics for you! :D Yeah, older Medicom stuff hasn't held it's age well. I'd love to get my hands on a set of their DBZ stuff, but they basically all suffered from deteriorating joints. The hinge in their shoulders would literally crumble. I've still got Ed's old body (We have the original Ed that released around the same time as Roy), it just wasn't very well made. His scars and automail were brilliantly done, but the plastic he's made from... meh. Also, his nasty pleather pants ate the paint off his automail leg.

A 1/6 Knuckles and Shadow from Sonic? You realize my sister would probably commit cold blooded murder to get ahold of those right? XD Although I myself am just curious to see pictures! <3
They're actually really common. I think most of the Sonic characters are right around 3 feet high (excluding humans, robots, and the odd-and-end big characters), so a true 1/6th Sonic is 6" tall. Jazwares released a whole slew of them a couple of years ago under the name Super Posers. The Sonic and Shadow aren't very well done (they have articulated quills that look funny), but Knuckles and Tails were made wonderfully. I do have a picture of Knuckles up on my tumblr, if you want to see him. On page 2 with pics of rebodied Sailor Mercury.

Also, Mulan barbie...you mean you made one? I'd love to see. :D This character is so neglected, recent "Once Upon A Time" drama on tumblr notwithstanding.
Oops... I think I messed up on some wordings. Most of my crew aren't full on customs, but they have been customized. Mulan is actually from my childhood. She's the Matchmaker Magic Mulan from the late '90s. Those dolls look so much better than any Mulan doll I've seen since.

There's also a die-cast 12" tall Optimus Prime that likes to police when everyone gets off the shelves. He's a full 12", but he's definitely not 1/6th scale.

Sorry, no dirty joke intended! I just meant that even though he's 12" tall when in robot mode, that's nowhere near big enough to be a 1/6 Transformer/robot semi truck. :D

And those are just the ones that are here and complete. :D I don't think I've ever sat down and listed them all. It's thanks to this forum and all the wonderful people here that I got into BJDs (I only have 1, a 1/4th RS Mei. I love her so much, but I probably won't get many more this big. And that's what I love about the DS. All are welcome here.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm happier with Ed on his Obitsu body. It's just much better made, plus nobody can beat an Obi at posing. I'm not the type to keep everyone in mint pristine condition. I want them to look like they should and be that character. Ed will eventually get 2 bodies, the 27cm that he's on now and a customized 23cm that will get custom built automail made from parts of his original Medicom arm and leg. He'd actually still fit in his Medi clothing that way, and be able to use all those amazing hands he came with, but he'd be much better built. Except those nasty paint-eating pleather pants. I'm not above body swaps, mods, paint, and custom outfitting to get them to look like I want.
We even did paintwork & some clothing swap to our HT Prince of Persia so he would look more like Prince from Warrior Within than Jake in the movie. Most of our crew have come to us second-hand, but even when they're brand new they usually promtly get de-boxed and customed a little. The only one that is actually still in his boxes is Tidus, but it's more of an issue with his balance that he's not on the shelf. Plus, he still smells brand new. We open him every once in a while, and every time it smells like he just came off the factory line. :D We do plan on eventually getting him a new body and making him some fabric clothes, we just haven't found a body we like for him.
We've also bought statues just for their heads. Rin is a Clayz bikini-clad PVC statue. Her head got pried off her body and when we do our next JunkySpot order she's getting her own Obitsu body. I really should start working on her clothes... Especially since Medicom Saber will hopefully start shipping at the end of the month...

If you're set on 1/6 scale dolls you definitely don't want to go 1/3. Ever see Robotech and Zentradi?

I got into 1/6 dolls in what I think is a reverse of what I hear from most people-- I started out collecting 1/3 abjds about six or seven years ago! I really loved how customizable they are... At the time I didn't really know anything about repaints or reroots or anything in a style that appealed to my sense of aesthetics. Then I got really into Monster High dolls when that line came out b/c of their unique face sculpts and concept, and I sort of fell in love with the size! It's so nice to be able to buy them accessories and make dioramas that wouldn't take up an actual full sized room in my house! haha So I guess I fell in love with their manageability...?

I JUST WROTE A WHOLE REPLY AND GOT TIMED OUT. *DED*

Okay, lets try this dance again.

ShadowKat:

Judging from the pics I've seen, he might be a little young to be Sam Ax. Apparently there's an old movie of his called "My Name Is Bruce" and that's what he's from. I also found some Xena: Warrior Princess dolls that featured his name (don't know how accurate or what they actually look like. I couldn't get the pics to load). I know that Xena and Hercules did some crossover shows, so he might be the same character?
<---I'll have to check that out. If he isn't too altered, aging him up could be pretty easy actually, especially since Bruce Campbell lost weight in the later seasons of Burn Notice. His Xena character has some wonky facial hair if I remember correctly though--yep, a goofy mustache.

http://www.bite.ca/wp-content/uploads/2 ... mpbell.jpg Here's "My Name is Bruce". That body is BRUTAL, but hey, he even comes with his own Hawaiian shirt and he could be aged up really easily!! Sam Axe is not as far from reality as I thought! Now Jeffrey Donovan just has to get a looklalike head made. XD Nah, there are so many "action hero" faces that one has to look something like him.

<-----Yay for pics!! Thank you in advance since I know it can be a pain in the butt. X_X As for DBZ, have you thought of getting them and sticking the heads on a True Type extra muscular body? Or Hot Toys could have a good replacement? I know my TrueType and RAH naked body are almost exact in proportion besides skin tone. (I just have the "regular" bodies, no musclemen here (yet? I never know XD)). The newer Ed doesn't seem too bad, but whooo boy does that little guy stink. I thought something was honestly WRONG until I read that this is status quo for Medicom toys and if you enjoy Alien that your doll version is going to stink your house like a bug bomb for a week. (Apparently she was made 90% out of the smelly stuff, or so said the poster. ^^;; )

They're actually really common. I think most of the Sonic characters are right around 3 feet high (excluding humans, robots, and the odd-and-end big characters), so a true 1/6th Sonic is 6" tall. Jazwares released a whole slew of them a couple of years ago under the name Super Posers. I do have a picture of Knuckles up on my tumblr, if you want to see him. On page 2 with pics of rebodied Sailor Mercury.
<-----Still not letting my sister get wind of that little fact. <_< Her giant 3ft Shadow plush is more than enough. I saw Knuckles on your blog, adorable! :D (Well, I doubt he wants to be called that but he's an adorable echidna to me. :D) But...spiked quills? That had to be a sad day at the R&D department. "Lets be completely non cost effective and make something move on the character that isn't supposed to move."

Oops... I think I messed up on some wordings. Most of my crew aren't full on customs, but they have been customized. Mulan is actually from my childhood. She's the Matchmaker Magic Mulan from the late '90s. Those dolls look so much better than any Mulan doll I've seen since.
<---Full stop, I want a Mulan doll now. XDD I still have of all things, a silly Mcdonalds doy where her skirt could come on and off to become "male" or "female". They totally disregarded the fact that she had molded breasts, darnit, those pants made her a man.

I understand most of your dolls aren't full on customs. I don't think many dolls are truly one person, start to finish full on customs. And besides, I like modifying better anyway. :>

Sorry, no dirty joke intended! I just meant that even though he's 12" tall when in robot mode, that's nowhere near big enough to be a 1/6 Transformer/robot semi truck. :D
<---Is this a size issue again? How even though Knuckles is 6'' he's a 1/6? I'm so confused. But then again Transformers toys confuse me. I own a couple movie figures (no judging! X3) and discovered their non-transforming "Movie replica" line, and that's the only Jazz that doesn't look like he's been scarfing on the Autobot equivalent of Dunkin' Donuts. (Transforming Jazz looks like a bulky ball. It's tragic.) The only time they seem to take size into account was with their "Autobot and Human sidekick" line.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm happier with Ed on his Obitsu body. It's just much better made, plus nobody can beat an Obi at posing. I'm not the type to keep everyone in mint pristine condition. I want them to look like they should and be that character. I'm not above body swaps, mods, paint, and custom outfitting to get them to look like I want.
<--I think we had a transmission error here. ^^;;; I only keep them in pristine condition when I think the doll looks perfect out of the box (i.e Roy) I'm all for customizing the heck out of something until it looks like how you want it!! That's the beauty if modification. :D

<---What size PVC statue was that? I'm dying to make a customized Izaya and Shizuo. <___< I also wanted to try my hand at a custom figma but the small size terrifies me.

I think I understand where you're getting confused. When you're talking about scale, it's not just how tall they are. Just because something is 12 inches tall doesn't make it 1/6th scale.

1/6th scale means that you take the character/object's height and width and scale them/it down by six. Most 1/6thers are right at 12 inches tall. This is because when you take an average person's size (Most men are 6 feet tall and women around 5 feet) and divide it by six, you get around 10-12 inches. When you take a shorter character (Sonic at 3 feet tall), and divide it by six, you get 6 inches. Super Posers Sonic, marketed as just a super posable big figure, has magically become a 1/6th scale doll next to all my other guys and gals. Same thing in reverse for Optimus. Even though he's 12 inches tall, he's scaled differently. I've seen a 1/5th Camaro in stores, and that thing is well over 2 feet long. Taking a giant semi-truck down to 1/6th would be absolutely massive! I'm not sure what scale Optimus is, but it's much tinier than 1/6th.

It's important to us that all of our characters are not only in-scale to their character, but also to each other. A 12 inch tall Knuckles would actually be 1/3rd scale. This is why Optimus is out of scale even though he's 12 inches (but he gets a pass 'cause he's awesome ;) ).
As for DBZ, have you thought of getting them and sticking the heads on a True Type extra muscular body? Or Hot Toys could have a good replacement? I know my TrueType and RAH naked body are almost exact in proportion besides skin tone.
We definitely want to get them someday, and we'll find them a new body, but the TrueType just doesn't work for Goku. Other than the skin tone issue, they're just not muscle-y enough (that and we're not big fans of the synthetic skin that they use on their torsos). The DBZ dolls had their own custom super-beefy bodies that I don't think Medicom have used on another doll since.
<---What size PVC statue was that? I'm dying to make a customized Izaya and Shizuo. <___< I also wanted to try my hand at a custom figma but the small size terrifies me.
Rin was luckily marketed under 1/6th scale. Most of them are going to be way too small for 1/6th (The majority of the market seems to be in the 1/8th scale). Even Rin is almost too tiny to use, but fortunately her character is tiny. You might try searching just for 1/6th anime figures on places like eBay and try to find another character that looks similar.
<---Full stop, I want a Mulan doll now. XDD I still have of all things, a silly Mcdonalds doy where her skirt could come on and off to become "male" or "female". They totally disregarded the fact that she had molded breasts, darnit, those pants made her a man.
MANLY PANTS! :D  Mulan was always my favorite Disney Princess, so that's why she has a special spot on our shelves. Try searching for the 90's era Mattel Mulan dolls. There were several made, including her in her battle outfit with short hair, a long hair version in the dress (that's the Matchmaker Magic one I have. She's lovely), and they made her Prince (I forget his name). Don't waste time on the newer Sparkle Princess line Mulan (she's not ugly, she just doesn't look like Mulan IMO).
Thanks for the compliment! :D To be fair to Jazwares, they didn't actually design Sonic and Shadow. They bought the molds from now-defunct Toy Island and started churning them out (in normal, yellow, and transparent blue. You can't call Super Sonic Super because his quills aren't spikey. He's just Yellow Sonic). We did have a normal Sonic, but he was such poor quality he's now in pieces in a box somewhere (I'm saving his hands for a NiGHTS custom). Shadow doesn't get displayed very much because he's Sleepy-Time Shadow. His hips can't support the weight of his head and he slowly falls to sleep over the course of a couple of weeks (AKA he shelf-dives. A Lot). Knuckles they hit out of the park (mostly because they are brand-new sculpts from Jazwares).
