How did everyone get into collecting 1/6 dolls?

I've been big into UC Gundam (which in America at least has always had a pretty modestly sized fandom at best) since I was 12, with a particular love for a certain character who appeared in like one OVA and literally no one else gives a damn about. Needless to say, there isn't any merch of the guy. So after years of not having anything, I figured I'd just make my own damn merch and decided a 1/6 doll was the way to go since I could change the clothes of that (unlike a static figure) and it wasn't anywhere as expensive as a BJD.

Soon enough, his sister and her stupid boyfriend decided they needed to be dolls to, along with various other Gundam characters no one cares about, some OCs, some Pokemon characters no one cares about, and other disturbances. It really is a slippery slope.

It's important to us that all of our characters are not only in-scale to their character, but also to each other. A 12 inch tall Knuckles would actually be 1/3rd scale.

<---I know what you mean, I'm a bit anal retentive on keeping everyone in scale with each other too. o_O

We definitely want to get them someday, and we'll find them a new body, but the TrueType just doesn't work for Goku. Other than the skin tone issue, they're just not muscle-y enough (that and we're not big fans of the synthetic skin that they use on their torsos). The DBZ dolls had their own custom super-beefy bodies that I don't think Medicom have used on another doll since.

I only work with the True Type Basic series. Even though he's not QUITE as muscular, I was thinking something like this might work for Goku?

MANLY PANTS! Mulan was always my favorite Disney Princess, so that's why she has a special spot on our shelves. Try searching for the 90's era Mattel Mulan dolls. There were several made, including her in her battle outfit with short hair, a long hair version in the dress (that's the Matchmaker Magic one I have. She's lovely), and they made her Prince (I forget his name). Don't waste time on the newer Sparkle Princess line Mulan (she's not ugly, she just doesn't look like Mulan IMO).

(That sounds terrible. XD) Also, Sparkle Princess Mulan looks like she's been hitting the sake a little hard IMO:

Thanks for the compliment! To be fair to Jazwares, they didn't actually design Sonic and Shadow. They bought the molds from now-defunct Toy Island and started churning them out (in normal, yellow, and transparent blue. You can't call Super Sonic Super because his quills aren't spikey. He's just Yellow Sonic). We did have a normal Sonic, but he was such poor quality he's now in pieces in a box somewhere (I'm saving his hands for a NiGHTS custom). Shadow doesn't get displayed very much because he's Sleepy-Time Shadow. His hips can't support the weight of his head and he slowly falls to sleep over the course of a couple of weeks (AKA he shelf-dives. A Lot). Knuckles they hit out of the park (mostly because they are brand-new sculpts from Jazwares).

<---Oh man, a shelf-diver. I hate those. I have one who stays in his box because of that. He's a static figure (and oh what a static figure he is...that ~body~, I don't even watch the series but I was like "MUST OWN") of Lancer Diarmuid:

I have another leaner with a really loose head that constantly falls forward to the point that I'm debating on gluing his head in a static position because it's so irritating.

I didn't get into dolls until my 50th birthday and then it was making cloth dolls. Two books got me into dolls:

Then my husband mentioned seeing Ball Jointed dolls at All Con in Dallas-I looked them up on the internet and found owners photographs and photo stories which led me to ordered first 1/12 dolls - Sleeping Elf dolls,

Wow, you carved wooden dolls? A relative of mine carved when he was alive and I've seen first hand how hard it is for a wood artisan to get it right, so I applaud you!!!

(Please do not take that as as an offense, I'm in the middle of asking a question in the 1/6th thread pertaining to this.) I love Nefertari's glowing skin tone, and I noticed your dolls seem to have personalities and styles that range from pretty pale redheads to nubian goddesses!!! <3 I always love seeing darker skin toe dolls!!! The diversity makes me so happy. ^_^

late on this one, but if you google around you should be able to find a headsculpt for bruce campbell in the 1/6 scale. i can't remember where on earth i got mine, too long ago, but it's pretty decent.

Siead, thanks for the advice! <3 The headsculpt on yours looks a little bit different than the "My Name Is Bruce" doll, I wonder if someone made two Bruce headsculpts? XDD, I adore your photo!! I feel like a fraud, getting into Bruce Campbell because of Burn Notice when 99% of people know him from his "Evil Dead" performances (which were so hilariously bad they were awesome--the man can sure pretend-fight a foam skeleton with some conviction darnit!). XDD

its' ok. i only got into him from Evil Deal because my da raised me on b-movies and Zena/etc. if i had tv i would be watching burn notice too! (can't wait to move and get netflix, hopefully it's on there)
and yes, the headsculpt i have is an unliscenced sculpt** designed to be from when he was younger.

** it's not a recast. the artist that made the sculpt did so without the actor's or a studio's permission (falling under the "homage" part of copyright law). kinda like those 3d printing places you can submit headshots to to get a custom head of yourself or an actor.

No offense taken; I started out collecting only tan dolls on the basis of dolls who look like me. Then I fell for the Orient Doll Tae sculpt, Girard, and diversity happened.
My Christmas doll will be my first tan Micro-5.5cm tall.
