Regerttably, since declaring bankruptcy in 2010, *all* dolliehs are out of my price range. I continue to enjoy the 1/6 crowd I now have, but the larger dolliehs are forever closed to me.

I have a lovely 1/4th lad, but the 1/3 ones (for which I yearn) are not to be. Even the least expensive Dollar store knock-off is not feasible. All $$$ now has to go for sheer survival. Still... I can come here and look and enjoy vicariously. :D

Old eyes. Can't see to make the clothing anymore. Love 'em, but can't do 'em justice. But boy I sure admire them here!

Awh! Cherry loves you too, ViVi!!!

Seriously, 1/6 is my favored scale of dolls and always has been and yes, part of that is due to a childhood playing with Barbie and getting use to the scale. There are Barbies who can rival and even surpass the cost of resin BJDs, so a price tag should never be a factor in how much a doll should mean to its purchaser.

Ri-ri has been to several conventions with me, and I promise you she gets more attention than any other doll present. I don't think it's just because of the costumes I make for her, or the face-up I gave her. She really does have a ton of personality and she really is beautiful in person, and most people simply can't believe it when I tell them she's a Volks tan dollfie with a Moxie Teenz head.

Cherry has her own wisdom about what makes an ABJD, which she has shared before, but it still holds true:

Please note that I am NOT saying that everyone who owns a resin BJD is a snob, or that anyone who likes to show off their lovely dolls is doing so in a spirit of have-and-have-not. I long ago determined that, even if I had unlimited cash resources, the price tag on a doll is NOT what makes it special. Cherry is the most special doll I ever owned and she cost less than $50 to assemble (she's a hybrid, horrorz).

According to my Darci who has one hand, a bad hair cut, her head falls off, and oxidation green spots it's how much you love your doll.

We ought to start a thread about what your doll likes to wear when they go out.

I've run across this attitude online a fair few times, usually people trying to dissuade a newcomer from buying a less expensive doll as their first resin bjd - the grounds given tend to be they're ugly, they don't pose, and they'll put the person off dolls for life. Oh, and occasionally something along the lines of if you're serious, you'll save up for one you really love instead of settling for second best.

It's like they're scared their choices and likes will somehow become invalidated if others genuinely want/prefer a doll that's less expensive than theirs. Or that they think people will think less of them.

I guess I don't really get having things as status symbols. Way back in my teens I would get quite annoyed when something I'd liked for ages became popular - not because it had become popular but because I was genuinely worried people would think I only had x because it was now popular. I don't begrudge someone having something expensive, I just don't see the point in the whole one-up-manship of status symbols. And I am aware that I could be seen as making just as much of a statement by not indulging in those games as those who do. Except, perhaps, I don't think mine's ever been a conscious thing (according to my mum, I've always been like that).

So from my point of view, an inexpensive bjd is as much a bjd as the most expensive one ever. I also believe that the only dolls anyone should ever own are the ones they want to, regardless of whether they're OOAK bjds or pound shop Monster High rip-offs.

After searching through company after company and finding gorgeous doll and gorgeous doll, the only doll I ever wanted to bring home was a Resinsoul Mei. I didn't even want her upgraded to the double-jointed body. I haven't done much with her since she arrived, but I love her so much and she's all that I could ask for in a doll. The main reason I wanted her so bad is because I couldn't find a 1/6th doll that would match her character, because she's been with me over 10 years now. Anything less wouldn't do her justice. I had thought about several times trying to make a Fairyland sculpt into her, but I just couldn't see it. But the Mei, she jumped out at me the moment I laid eyes on her in light tan and just screamed at me "Look! It's me! Bring me home!"

There is nothing wrong with loving expensive dolls. There is nothing wrong with loving inexpensive dolls. I really can't imagine someone falling in love with a sculpt and then finding out it's made by a cheap company and saying, "No, I think I'll go get this really expensive doll instead because that one doesn't cost enough." Would I like to own a doll like a Fairyland or Soom? If I ever felt a connection to one of their sculpts, I would. Will Resinsoul be getting my next couple of dollieh orders? Yes. Is it because they're cheap? No, it's because I love their sculpts and I adore their bodies. They're some of the prettiest mature girl MSD bodies I've seen IMO. (Of course, I'll have to start saving my monies instead of impulse buying playline craft fodder dolliehs at Walmart. XD :D )

I have to say that from Ariel on, the Resinsoul/Bobobie headsculpts are just the most gorgeous things. Whoever is doing their face-sculpting is amazing. I haven't seen anything I like half so much except for the old Dollzone Linlan, Lotus and Orlando.

I agree, Misty. My first resin love was Mei and her facial sculpt is still one of my all time favorites.

I still want a Mei... some year when I have money again I'll get one and make her my willow nymph. I ADORE my BBB Espree boy. I'm still amused that the first time I posted pictures of him (with a Kiki-chan78 face up of course) in a BBB thread over on DOA, someone asked if he was a Volks! ^___^ Do I trust him to stand on his own? No, he sits very pretty though. His sculpt was exactly what I wanted for Riou. Just like my Luts KDelf Ani was exactly what I wanted for Momiji and the DZ Shoyo was perfect for Nagi. As long as the doll is aesthetically pleasing to what I want and the body isn't total crap, it's only between me and my wallet how much they cost. ^____^
