How did everyone get into collecting 1/6 dolls?

Barbie, Jenny, Fashion Royalty, Obitsu and 1/6 resins - basically anything 10-12inch/21-27cm or in the neighborhood.

Accept Alice as a modern fairy tale. The Oz books have been accepted that way.

I think the turn off with the Ever After dolls for me are the faces and heads, their eyes feel too small for their heads to me. It works with the Monsters and the size of their eyes. I can handle "big head" Barbies because the features stay in proportion, and Darci dolls I grew up with have slightly bigger heads but proportional features. Big "Animae" eyes are comfortable with me too but not too big.

Not trying to sound like a smartass here, but that's just the size that most of the anime dolls came in when I started collecting them.

I discovered Obitsu when I was looking for a wig for a Queen Beryl doll whose previous owner had replaced her original hair with a purple wig, and the rest is history...
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

I was looking for some figures that I could pose in order to draw manga.

I started mine for drawing, too. Did you stay at drawing?

I noticed my 1:1 life really sucked up any time I could give to drawing, but my action doll hobby grew in spite of that.

I enjoyed designing and knitting clothes for 1/6 dolls and bought a cheap doll for measurement purposes. Then I bought a 2nd cheapie, so that I could display more than one outfit at a time. Those two were the only ones for a long time. Then one day I saw a 1/6 doll with gorgeous long hair (I'm a sucker for long hair). I was admiring her and the next thing my friend took the doll from me and went and paid for it and gave it to me as a gift. The die was cast...

Slowly the number of dolls I had increased. Some I bought, some were gifts. Then one of my colleagues daughters gave me her Barbie because, as she put it, 'I don't play with dolls anymore but since you do, you may have her'. Bless her little heart. I was smitten with my Barbie and more dolls were added to the mix.

I had 8 dolls for a long time before I bought another doll. At this stage it was still about the clothes, rather than the dolls, but slowly that started to change. Then I was given some dolls as gifts. Then for my birthday, Christmas, etc. And I was buying too... They are just so beautiful! I found it was relaxing 'playing' with my dolls. Finally, it was very much the dolls that were the hobby... rather than the knitting and then sewing. Oh I still make them clothes, but it's about the dolls now... not the clothes. :)

Currently I have 40 dolls. They all have names (obviously) and each has their own story to tell. My husband doesn't get it though. He says 'he doesn't understand' my affinity for dolls. What can I say? I enjoy playing with dolls. It's fun n relaxing! My best friend also collects and 'plays' with dolls and we have conversations about our dolls that just blows my husband's mind ;) (I think he secretly thinks we are nuts :D )

Sadly though, I am very conscious of the fact that there are many people who just 'don't get it' and that inhibits me a lot. Perhaps one day I will have the courage to ignore the cynics, take my dolls outside and enjoy doing a photo-shoot with them ;)

MelodyT Auuuhhh. ;___; Your reply sounds like it should be in my dolly shame thread! Sweetness, there is nothing wrong with your hobby, and if you want to go out and do a photoshoot with your dolls, do it. Here's a protip from someone who embarrasses easily: Disguise what you're doing. If anyone gives you the stink-eye or asks what you're doing with that "you weirdo" voice, tell them you're a professional photographer working with a company to take test photos of their new doll line. (Just don't say this while you're taking pictures with like, an iPhone or something. XDD Make sure your camera looks somewhat believable, or you could elaborate further and say they're just test shots to send off to the editing department. (Editing department? What editing department? *Whistles innocently*)

<---Ahh, the innocence some children can have, bless them indeed! <3 What a sweet way to get a new doll. I can tell HOW you got her really sticks out in your mind.

I find it relaxing to customize too, it's creative catharsis and there's nothing wrong with it. :D

<----A lot of people "don't understand", but it's their loss in my opinion! I'm glad you have someone to gab dolly with! My friends are all "...Uhhh....." And when I try to explain customizing, the only person who comes REMOTELY close to understanding customizes small action figures which is a whole different arena!!!

Sadly though, I am very conscious of the fact that there are many people who just 'don't get it' and that inhibits me a lot. Perhaps one day I will have the courage to ignore the cynics, take my dolls outside and enjoy doing a photo-shoot with them ;)

Like...since I was four years old. Mom bought a Malibu Barbie for me. I remember she was bagged. We'd ordered her through the Sears catalog and picked her up at the store. My mom was my biggest enabler. XD Even during the teen "I'm too old for dolls" period she still gave me a Holiday Barbie at Christmas.
I really dove back into collecting in 2005. I'd discovered BJD's but wasn't quite ready to jump into them yet. I found Junkyspot and fell in love with the 1/6 Obitsus. Things have just snowballed from there. :p

My husband finds it hilarious that I'm at my happiest rebodying and restoring Barbies. He gets downright giggly when I'm popping heads off. XD

Well I had been looking into BJDs for a few years on sites that were selling them for hundreds of dollars. D: To a kid with no money, I kinda lost interest until I came across a picture of Ai Enma from Azone. :o She was soooooo cool looking, I just had to have her. >w< Unfortunately, she was hard to find. :/ By that time, I had discovered other Azones, including Ciel Phantomhive, and with a stroke of luck, I found a used Ciel for $150 on ebay. <33 He was slightly damaged, but I didn't care. X3 I had just gotten a lot of birthday money so I jumped on it and he came in a day after my birthday.^^ I still wanted Ai, but I gave up because she was too hard to find, too expensive, and she was slightly bigger then Ciel. =w= That would've bugged me. So. Freakin. Much. X3 So now I'm in the process of making a custom~ That's my story. X3

I blame one thing for my starting to collect 1/6th dolls:

Seeing Battle Doll: Angelic Layer, I really fell in love, it was such a sweet and fun story I even bought the box set, I was searching cosplays for Angelic Layer and found one, where they had a little doll as Hikaru and they called it an Obitsu...I was intrigued...

I forgot about it for awhile but got intrigued again a year or so later...Got Haruka for an early Christmas present and it all snowballed from there.

Now I got a resin 1/6th an RS Bei waiting for me...I can't open her til X-mas...XD;; But yeah...It snowballed fast...I got Riven as a late birthday gift to myself using my own money, I got Kaname that same year, Haruhi followed after, a few Monsters, Yuichi, Avalon Kazumi and NOW Vala...
