What is your favourite song and what does it mean to you?

Postby MeltedCaramel » Fri Dec 20, 2013 2:03 am

Okay, title won't let me write "one of your favourite songs" but that's the general meaning here. It can be anything, something that has been playing on your playlist on repeat, something that surprised you, something where the lyrics speak to you, the beat holds you in a trance, anything! Just tell me what, and why. If you like post some sample lyrics and a link to the song. It doesn't have to be the original, just your favourite version that speaks to you.

I'll start. One of my favourites is called "Kiss That Frog" by Peter Gabriel. I grew up listening to the music my mother and uncle listen to, and I have distinct memories of my uncle putting his old record in his record player and blasting this so it played throughout the entire house. It's a jaunty, tongue-in-cheek song where the lyrics are thinly veiled references to sex, all set to prominent harmonicas and fiddles and it just makes me want to dance every time I hear it. It has good memories attached and the song makes me happy, which is reason enough to rocket it to hovering at the top with my other favourites.

Sample Lyrics:
He's gonna dive down in the deep end
He's gonna be just like your best friend
So what's one little kiss
One tiny little touch
Aaah, he's wanting it so much
I swear that this is royal blood
Running through my skin
Oh can you see the state I'm in
Kiss it better, Kiss it better
(Kiss that frog)

So, tell me of your musical muses!! :D

Hmm... good question. Probably 'Slow Fade' by Casting Crowns. It's a reminder of responsibility. We can fade away from what is most important or sacred to us if we're not mindful of our actions and choices in life.

I'll have to listen to it Trethowan!! :D Pretty ironic first post since I'm right now listening to "Rockstar" by Nickleback which is basically a snarky ode to excess and complete asshattery.

Its a Japanese song known as Ren-ai circulation. I have no idea who the original singer was, what with all that Vocaloid technology. The version I heard was done to Solid Snake's Japanese voice. The song has a very uplifting feel to it that the various alternate singer versions I heard just brings a smile to me.

My absolute favorite song is Southern Cross by Stills and Nash...It means a lot to me because it was the lullaby my mom sang to me when I was a little girl. It's always been special...I know all the words because my mom would sing the ENTIRE song...Sometimes more then once til I fell asleep.

Iwa-Hoshi You wouldn't happen to have a link to the song version you're talking about would you? :) I adore all genres of music and more than a little J-pop and K-pop has snuck in there!!

Alopecia No Hime Oh my God!! That one has personal meaning to me as well, because my mother loves the song and we often sing together in our horribly off-tune voices on long car trips. It's such a gorgeous song, the kind that makes your chest swell with emotion. Having good memories tied to it makes it all the better!!

Dollykim, wow, that's a pretty unique choice! I don't think I've ever heard a song quite like it. I kind of want to say it has shades of "Different-Genre-Billy-Idol" but that might be to some perceived similarity in the voices or due to the fact that I'm falling asleep typing. I certainly see what you mean by "musical happiness" though!! :D It's so upbeat and cheerful!

i can never pick favourite things...

i'll put up "hold the heathen hammer high" by tyr, just because it's got funny memories. my niece, when she was still a baby, was one of those kids that got really grumpy when she was tired, so i used to sing to calm her down. and she loves that song.
so once year at christmas, at my uber-religious family home with their minister and his kin over to eat, i'm stuck with a grumpy baby, humming pagan songs, while my husband is trying not to laugh his head off.

I listen mostly to delta blues or alternative with a heavy blues influence, but I do like a general mix of alternative.
That being said, I don't have a favorite song of all time, but I've been really loving "Dance in the Graveyards" by Delta Rae.
I think it comes out of losing both grandfathers, my remaining step grandfather, and a really close friend in the past year. It's good to have something that's so good and triumphant to listen to, especially around the holiday season when I am missing them all more than ever...
