As a note: I'm trying to listen to all of the songs everyone posts, so try and post a link to
your favourite version when possible, so I know I'm listening to what moves YOU.
Siead Oh haha, that's a good one Siead!! Normally I'm not into heavy rock, but I honestly and truly like this song a lot. The chorus really sucks you in!! As for uber-religious relatives, I'm somewhat in the same boat. My neighbour is a bible-thumping, Devil-is-gonna-getchoo uber-Christian (who unsurprisingly passes judgement like she claims only God has the right to...ugh. I consider myself spiritual but organized religion is forever off of my table platter). A few years ago before my injury had claimed most of my ability to move and do things, I would often cook(I can knock you off your feet with my cuisine! Italians stuff you and then make sure you have seconds for the refrigerator at home) on the grill outside. To economize, I would often end up cooking around 40 burgers at a time. Naturally this took time, so I dragged my old boombox-with-CD-player outside with me to jam out while I got my cook on. As my neighbour comes out to go to Church, I'm listening to Prince, who is PG-13 when he's deciding to be tame. Needless to say my neighbour comes out just as Prince is belting out the lyrics:
I clocked the jizz from a friend
Of yours named Vanessa Bet (Bet)
She said u told her a fantasy
That got her all wet (Wet)
Something about a little box with a
Mirror and a tongue inside
What she told me then got me so hot
I knew that we could slide! To make it worse, all I could do was laugh hysterically at the look on her face, I couldn't even catch my breath to manage a neighbourly "Sorry!"
Not that I was.
Mirrin I really, really enjoyed this song.
For being about death it has a rather rejuvenating feel to it. I also listen to lots of blues songs, but my tastes run towards Eric Clapton (one of my "Big Four" as I call the artists I've listened to all of my life that hold a special place in my heart) and B.B. King. The only song about graveyards I listen to is "Gravedigger" by Dave Matthews Band. I love the song, but if I'm maudlin, it will make me sob. This line gets me all the time:
Cyrus Jones 1810 to 1913
Made his great grandchildren believe
You could live to a 103
A hundred and three is forever when you’re just a little kid
So, Cyrus Jones lived forever.*Sobsob*
But seriously Mirrin, I'm glad this song gives you comfort, and I'm so sorry for the passing of so many loved ones in so short a time. It's always like getting hit with a sledgehammer directly to the heart when a loved one passes, but so many in such a short period must feel more like getting blind-sided by a semi.
kenaiqueen Awww man just listening to this makes me sob. And your story behind it is so pure and sweet that I had to have a good cry at it as well!! Thank you for the heartfelt answer. Everyone's stories are so varied and fascinating!
ShortNCuddlyAm This one makes me smile.
Your reasons behind such an upbeat song are deeply personal. Remember you are a person first and foremost. Labels are what other people stick on us, not what we
are on the inside. Think of a label like what it is, a sticker you can peel off and throw away. You're a good person, and I think that's what really counts in the eyes of the people who are worth a moment of your time.
quidam That's okay! It can just be something that has been playing on repeat on your music player lately! It doesn't have to have a deep personal meaning to you. If it makes you happy, makes you think, whatever, it applies here!
