I have so many favorites, but the one that sticks out the most to me is "When I'm Alone" by Nevertheless. I ran across a video with this song on Youtube during a low point in my life, and it really spoke to me.

This part especially:

I'm just trying to find out
Who I am on my own
I had you right beside me
But now you're gone and I know
That when the room clears I'm still here
Who am I when I'm alone?

It was almost exactly what I was going through. I won't give exact details, but my family seemed to go their own ways after my parent's divorce and since I was so used to sticking together, it was like I didn't know who I was or what to do. This song really got to me during that time, and for some reason it helped a little, too.

coloredimage Hey, Billy Joel is classic!! It's not corny. :) I love the refrain when he just sings "la de deh dah". I always feel when a singer can just use his/her voice without words and still captivate they're in a higher category of artist altogether!!!

Kirahfaye  , I listen to mainly 60's-90's music, it doesn't mean you're old, it means you have good taste! :D This has such a slow, soothing melody to it. I also have a weakness for really good gospel music, especially the haunting sounding hymns. I'm a mixed bag like you though, I listen to all sorts of things!!

Qrinta Haha, awesome choice!!! And the memories associated with it sound a lot like mine with "Kiss That Frog", except my mother liked cranking the music up just as much!!

Stormlight Josh Groban just has an amazing voice, period. He's cute, but it's his voice that captivates. I love his song "Raise Me Up" with it's almost Celtic sounding touches in the background music.

Gift_in_Edge I couldn't find the 2011 version to listen to, but I found the one from 1979? Such a dreamy, sweet, wistful piece of music!!!

littlesamuraigirl We all have those songs that get us through the tough times, and this one is a good one to pick. Being a child of divorced parents myself I can relate, though I know every situation is different. Regardless, this is a beautiful piece of music.

Let's keep this on going!! All us computer junkies have to listen to something right?

Here's another of my many favourites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYdk_TcCeW8 The Duhks-"The Mists of Down Below"

Why I like it: Country, spiritual, pop, this song can't seem to decide what it is and for that I adore it!

Sample lyrics:

So I looked hard at reasons for
The drifters going door to door
Dreaming of the mists of down below
But I'm sure they'd go anywhere they could
If wings became their neighborhoods
And there'd be nowhere they wouldn't know.

been playing assassin's creed 4 too much. has me in a pirate-y mood.
so have some Swashbuckle: Bringing Scurvy Back. (thrash metal pirates)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzQkMzqivMY

i tried to find a live one but the sound quality all sucked.
lyrics:
The parchment turns as the quest begins./Brothers in arms with the blood of sin.
Minds ingrained upon the route, each and all our black hearts devout.
Hung or shot, stabbed or drowned./These pleasures make our world go 'round.
From behind a veil of power and pride we sat, enthroned amongst the slain.
And with the candor of unsung songs we laughed at all our shameless gains.
The hell we raised upon the seas./Cause of death and fear on the main.
Survived damnation and the tests of time./Now we're back for blood again!
Tempted by a nameless prize, and splendid riches of unspeakable size.
The feeling that grows with each the passing tides.
To pilfer and plunder the guilt aside.

Back for the attack./To bring scurvy back!(repeats)

Your village, we'll ransack./All the loot that we'll pack.
Always ready for the attack./We're bringing scurvy back!
You'll have no time to flee./There's only death at sea.
Fearing our attack./We're bringing scurvy back!
Raising our ales tonight in honour of our fight.
Drink 'til we attack./We're bringing scurvy back!
We'll thrash until we die!/'Til our ships burn to the sky!
Killing for the attack./We're bringing scurvy back!

I admit to being both old and a Gleek and without Glee, I would not know much about the newer songs out there. This song by this performer just blew me away. It's Adam Lambert singing "Marry the Night" and I believe it's a Gaga, altho I'm not real familiar with her or her stuff. (God, I'm so old!) It's just so hilariously over the top, it makes me laugh...all the while being rather, um, arousing I'll say. If I were young and male and gay, I'd so go for him. And, Steampunk...yeah! My boy dolls want that outfit now!

Siead XD, I've always liked songs about maritime things! Every time I think of anything pirate-related I always think back to my school choir days and the song "The Ghost Ship". I still love that song, but I dearly wish someone professional would do a cover of it!

kenaiqueen I'm not a Gleek, but I really should be because I adore cover versions of songs from all eras. (Celtic Woman's cover of the old Irish folk song "Siuil A Run (Walk My Love)" sticks in my head, it's so haunting and pretty. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMnpM-htqvM ) Adam Lambert has a really androgynous sexual thing going on for him doesn't he? And that steampunk outfit is completely awesome. Now, Lady Gaga is a touchy subject because half of the population love her and the other half think she's a Madonna rip-off. I happen to like a lot of her stuff, and she's worth checking out if you like Adam Lambert's cover. :) I'd start with "Applause", it's peppy and unapologetic and I rather like it. :D

Okay, I'll share another of mine to keep the thread going:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA46ZNjrzeY Sting- "Brand New Day"

Why I like it: I find it impossible not to be lifted up by the beat and the lyrics. It reminds me there's always tomorrow, even when I feel like there isn't.

You can turn the clock to zero, honey
I'll sell the stock, we'll spend all the money
We're starting up a brand new day

Turn the clock all the way back
I wonder if she'll take me back
I'm thinking in a brand new way

Turn the clock to zero, sister
You'll never know how much I missed her
Starting up a brand new day

Turn the clock to zero, boss
The river's wide, we'll swim across
Started up a brand new day

one of my favorite songs is Helplessness Blues by the Fleet Foxes. UwU when i got my iPod Touch last year, it was one of the first songs my sister put on there for me. my sister is my best friend in the whole world, so just that alone makes it special for me! it also reminds me of a sort of acceptance of the industrial, government-controlled world, but not a complete approval of it, which is how i feel. the song is very bittersweet.

Oh man I'm another one with a list of favorites that rotate. I love "Snuff" my Slipknot (seriously, you'd never know it was by them. So mellow and melancholy. Another one I listened to on loop while I was going through trouble with my ex was "So Long, Goodbye" by 10 Years. I also adore a lot of stuff by Sixx AM and Shinedown. I'm also really hooked on Counting Stars by OneRepublic. And Adam Lambert is one of my guilty pleasures.

Wow, all I could think of was that sounds so much like the 60's protest songs of my misspent youth! Brought back some nice memories. Thanks for the link.

squishyfoxes Oh, this is so...pretty, for lack of a better word. :D Gorgeous music. My favourite "protest" type song is by (of course) Peter Gabriel and it's called "The Tower That Ate People". It's definitely a more techno/rock beat, but as far as protests go I find it awesome, especially the haunting chorus at the end of a bunch of workers singing "Brick by brick, by brick, by brick we're building, brick by brick..." over and over. (There's two versions of the song, here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTQDS8dA6YE )

There’s a rumble in the floorboards
No shutting out the sound
And the workers all below me
Digging underground.

Feel the building all around me
Like a wrap of armoured skin
But the more we are protected
The more we’re trapped within.

We're building up and up,
We're building up and up,
We're building up and up,
We're building up and up,
Till we can touch the sky!

Tell it like it is
Till there’s no misunderstanding
When you strip it right back
Man feed machine
Machine eat man

Tell it like it is (On this land, we cast our hope)
Till there’s no misunderstanding
You make up what you like (we make our home)
Man feed machine
Machine eat man

OkamiKodomo I love "Counting Stars"!!! <3333 I like peppy music, and guilty-pleasure like it reminds me of Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco. ^^;;

kenaiqueen Haha, youth is wasted on the young as they say. What protest songs do you speak of btw? :)
