Moxie Teenz rooted hair w/ 1st wave clothes @ Grocery Outlet

Momdusa on Tumblr found a Moxie Teen Arizona at Grocery Outlet for $16.99. She looks like the first wave wigged Arizona but her hair is rooted!

There were three waves of Moxie Teenz before they were cancelled. The first two featured wigs on all the dolls, the third/final wave (wearing formal wear, like a prom dress) switched to rooted hair.

I don't know if the box has been scrubbed of all references to wig play. If it still mentions the wig then this might be a one-time consumer switcheroo: someone could've bought two dolls and swapped their outfits and returned the doll with rooted hair in the first wave outfit. (Seems far-fetched but I recall seeing some collectors complain about the rooted hair, so if they wanted the prom dress on a doll with wigged hair then this is how they'd do it without paying for two dolls.)

It’s also possible MGA is unloading leftover third wave dolls to outlet stores using whatever outfits they still have. If you see a new crop of these dolls in discount stores let us know if the box mentions the wig in the contents list or box graphics.

Unfortunately I don't know momdusa so I can't ask her if the doll was secured in the box like it came from the factory, or about the box. If I can figure out a way to contact her via Tumbler I will. eta: I found her ask box so I sent a message, will let you know if she replies. :)

Hmnn...this is quite strange!! A dollieh mystery indeed!! This feels more spooky than it should after a night of writing and editing creepypasta for a friend. XDD I'm curious to see if she replies because that's a bargain I could get in on. :D

Oddly enough I was only recently reading an article (in FDQ, I think) about frankenbarbies (OK, I'm reasonably sure the article didn't call them that ;) ) where Mattel used to mix and match bits to make whole dolls - they were concentrating on the early-mid 70s. But it does sort-of make sense if your doll is not aimed at collectors to use what you have to hand to make the dolls if you're coming to the end of a run/line/company (only sort-of because as a child I would very definitely have noticed that doll a had the same arms, for example, as doll b whereas doll c didn't)

Hasbro used to do this sort of thing with 1/6 scale GI Joes. It was pretty common in the late 60s-early 70s for dead stock to get recycled. I recall reading stories of people getting foreign head Joes in regular play line boxes and some of the foreign (Soldiers of the World) uniforms on regular Joes. I also remember several cases in the 90s and 2000s; the 30th Anniversary GI Joe "Joe Colton" was originally sold with a Green Beret uniform but when orders exceeded production, they substituted a snow outfit from the regular play line. There was at least one instance where a run of earlier Classic Collection Joes showed up at K Mart with newer production bodies and those same bodies (the Super Articulated) which were supposed to be used on higher price point figures ended up on a run of cheaper carded figures sold at Wal Mart.

If even the big companies will do this to move stock or fill orders, it makes sense that a smaller company might have done so as well.

Last autumn I bought a Moxie Teenz Tristen from ebay, because I wanted the body for my Disney Store Evanora. The doll wore the first wave Tristen's outfit, but, surprisingly, her hair was rooted. I checked the picture I have stored from the sale, and the box is a little different from the actual first wave boxes, and has no mention of wigs. I remember that when I got the doll I assumed that MGA had either planned and then canceled a relaunch of the series or was just getting rid of existing stock.
