Odd Question

Ah. Thanks for the advice. I do have a hobby lobby near by-ish. I am afraid of paints, since I would have to start all over again, should I screw up. I may have steady hands, but I've never painted a doll face before, so to me it seems uber scary.

Hobby Lobby carries a nice "mid range" set of pastels. They're more expensive than the student grade stuff, but they're not going to break the bank. And again, if you can get a coupon, they're even cheaper. I paid about $24 for mine, without a coupon or sale.


This is the set. 36 colors. Not the best range for blush tones, but enough to get you started.

The good thing about water color paints is that they are VERY forgiving. If you mess up, just wet a q-tip, (I like to use those tapered ones) and wipe away the mistake! If you like the look of painted details but are struggling with acrylics, definitely go for watercolors.

Ah cool. I will look into those as well. I found some Krylon ColorMaster flat clear spray on lacquer on the Walmart website. Is that safe to use on a doll? I do know I need a clear flat spray lacquer. And Mr. Super Clear is like 13.00 for a small can at VOLKS USA. I found a 40% off coupon to print off for Hobby Lobby, but I may have to re print a new one depending on when I can get hubby to take me.

If anything I can ask dad to get me some art stuff for my birthday.

Avoid Krylon like the plague!!! No, if you're looking for a bargain brand sealant, go with Testor's Dullcote. It's not great but it won't harm your dolls. But truly, if you're looking to do face-ups for realz, spring for the MSC. It's worth it. Get it on junkyspot if you can. VolksUSA is down for a while anyway, but their shipping is outrageous. If you're going to order from volks, my preference is honestly the ZM Powder spray, but that's just me.

Ah, thanks for the warning. I'll avoid it like a plague, lol. Yes, I plan on doing my doll's face up. sending his head off kinda scares me. I can look on Ebay for MSC or Mr. Super Clear.

I'll appreciate any tips on face ups I can get since he is my first doll. Although making his wig is taking forever >_<.

If you have den of angels access, there are some great tutorials on there, for the basics. Otherwise, there are some videos on youtube that I recommend. Let me see if I can find the links.

EDIT: This is one of the best videos out there for a no-paint face-up. The artist explains what's going on as the example plays in the background. I do definitely encourage you to experiment. Every artist has a style of their own, and it's only by getting familiar with your new medium that you'll be able to figure out what works for you. I flip flop all over the place between water color pencils, acrylics, and water colors for the details.

Ah, yeah. I realize I may have to do other mediums just to get the face up result I want. Since he didn't come with fanged lips, I will most likely have to paint them. As for mods, Don't feel comfy with that just yet. I'll have to settle for trying my best to paint his scar on. I do have a floating head. I can probably practice with him.

Just to clarify, Krylon is a very good brand of spray products, just not for dolls.

Oh haha, yeah, I didn't mean avoid it for everything. Just dolls.

On a semi-related note, Myrretah and I found this Golden Acrylic spray stuff with UV cut in it. It seems equivalent to the Liquitex Soluvar stuff, which is another acceptable but not great alternative to MSC, and we're going to experiment with on some scrap resin laying around. If it works, we'll post a review on it. PS: The liquitex soluvar is only "not great" because it doesn't dry totally matte; it has a slight sheen to it. It also takes much longer to dry.

Another edit: I can try to find that tutorial I told you about for using white acrylic paint to make removable scars, but it's also on DoA. And I've seen people make vampire fangs for dolls out of the points of toothpicks. Paint white and glue in place with a little Aileen's, after the face-up is done, but before the gloss.

Hmm, who knew toothpicks were so versatile. Thanks. Ah, thanks for the info, K2!. But given how I am I like to avoid stuff deemed unsafe for dolls. Even if the doll is vinyl. I have two vinyl dolls and one plastic with vinyl hands and head[MH doll]

As for the Liquitex not really sure on that brand. Their acrylic paints are good though. I had good acrylic paints but lost them.

As for DOA, I no has access. Kinda stupid they have invite only registration. But oh well. I've already cleaned up that spilt milk and moved on. You peeps are much nicer.
