jointed hands questions..

Postby Siead » Mon Apr 21, 2014 9:09 pm

debating getting a pair for riddick but i had a few questions about jointed hands, figured i'd ask the gang here :)
mostly wondering about how they are posed, if they are strung with bitty elastics, or with wire (or both)
also wondering about their fragility, the odds of them breaking in the joints.
third question was, does anyone know of a reseller that keeps them in stock? or are the odds that i'll be waiting into the months to get them from a place like Alice's Collections.

been hesitating because i can be a bit rough on my toys, but the way riddick's hands are right now, he can't even hold a weapon... ok and him being able to flip the bird would be funny too.

They are generally strung together with elastic. I suppose it would be possible to string them with wire, but that would run the risk of chipping the resin.

Maybe look around for a pair of regular hands that are of the right scale and color posed in a "holding something" position. They'd be cheaper, less prone to breakage, and easier to fix if they do break.

Another possibility is that, if you are willing to take the chance, it is possible to heat resin hands and bend them into the position you want. You have to boil them, take them out quickly, bend them a little, and put them back in the boiling water, and repeat until you have them in the position you want them.

What little experience I've had with jointed hands is that they're both awesome and a pain. They're great for poses IF you can get them to hold the pose. More often than not mine tend to curl into little fists. Or, haha, I have to constantly turn them around... Vargas' fingers always look like they've gone rogue. Or like Cthulhu tendrils. Whichever. I have a pair of Doll Leaves (I think?) and their tension is connected at the wrist to the rest of the arm elastic so they're really too tight. The only way to fix it though is to loosen the arms and that I can't do. If you can find a pair that are independently strung within the hand (meaning the elastic isn't then connected to the arm) you'll be better off. My Granado hands are "self-contained" but I don't believe Granado sells their hands separately. We ask from time to time, but they're just not selling them unless you buy a whole doll.

Good luck finding the best hand solution!

Ps. I often use poster tack to make my dolls hold things, even with their jointed hands. It usually works well for me.

while i've looked at other hands, it's hard to see how they would look on him. his mirodoll body is a pretty chunky guy, so i'd probably have to get stuff for 70cm or bigger boys. plus he's tan >.<
i don't mind ebay-ing. i just need to save up for them heh.
i might try the boil method. my biggest issue is the hands are just to damn straight. all my girls have at least a little bend to them so i can elastic-band something in place and, at the right angle, it will photograph ok. but for him, it just looks bad. i don't like having his hands in shots for the most part cuz it looks weird. and if i screw it up and break something i can glue it back together.
thanks guys :)

Ooh, yes. Miro bodies are really stout. Mine are 60cm and 68cm respectively but still have to wear clothes sized for 70cm.

omg omg victoriavictrix that worked so well! i didn't wanna try pushing it too far, but at least now it loks like he can have a loose grip on things rather than just slap-hands. (flat, open palms)

Hooray!

You might want to see if you can pick up some extra pairs of hands cheap, that you can try more extreme bends on.
