The end of an era...

Postby quidam » Tue Jun 10, 2014 12:30 pm

Looking in the mirror today I saw it...my first white hair!!!
*gasp!!!!*

Okay, I'm not actually upset. I've wondered since I was a kid if I would inherit my Granddad's lovely silvery-white hair, and if my single strand is any indication, then yes I have. Plus, I have super-duper fine hair, and I'm told that white/gray/silver/whatever hair tends to be thicker. I very much look forward to to thicker hair, no matter what the color.

My cousin just found her first a week ago and bought hair color the same day to hide it. It was sort of funny, since she is a no-makeup, bluejeans type of girl. I never thought she would care.

So, knowing that there all all different sorts of ages here, do you embrace the change, or do you try to hide it for as long as you can?

On a dolly side note, I have a sudden desire to have a doll with beautiful white hair.

The lady that cut my hair from elementary up through most of high school found a cluster of about 6 white hairs on the top of my head when I was in 7th grade. I blame my sister. ^_~ I wouldn't know if there are more by now (just turned 39), I've been dying my hair with henna for over a decade. ^______^

I got a ton of white hairs when I was super sick a few years back, (no vitamin D in my body and my hair took a beating), and they're apparently here to stay.

They're a really beautiful snow white color and I kind of wish I had more of them so I could celebrate them. As it is, there aren't enough of them to look cool-they only dull down the rest of my color and make my hair look thinner where they cluster and are a pain n the butt when I try to dye them XD

But yes, I plan on embracing them when they finally do start looking cool!

I have quite a lot of white hairs now, but due to having very thick hair (as in both lots of it and the hair itself being quite thick) cut very short it's not all that noticeable. Until recently people's reaction was to get close and peer at my head as they thought I was exaggerating - now they still think I'm exaggerating but don't have to get in close enough to look like they're looking for nits!

I have no plans on hiding it when it gets more noticeable (more than one person has suggested I should grow it longer again so I can dye it when the grey gets too noticeable - I have mostly politely told them to go away) - nor am I taking any care to avoid wrinkles and the like. Growing older is something we all do and I have no desire to hide the signs of that (this isn't some kind of better-than-you anti-vanity thing; it's more some kind of being too lazy and having other priorities kind of thing ;) )

Oh, and age wise - mid 40s and loving it :D

I have 3 dolls with white hair currently (although one is going to braided with colourful ribbons) - two are white resin, and one is so pale as to be almost white.
Remember, the reverse of stressed is desserts.
Growing older is mandatory. Growing up is optional.

I got my first grays when I was a senior in high school. According to my mom, she doesn't remember a time when her dad didn't have white hair, so I have him to blame - only my grays are that dingy color while PawPaw's was this glorious white. Plus, like arrowchild said, they tend to make my hair look thin at the roots. So, yeah - I cover them up as best I can.

I feel bad for those of you who developed it early. My grandmother had a skunk-streak in high school that she always covered.

When I went home yesterday I had to search for more, and am happy to have figured out how to spot them easier. It seems they are very shiny compared to my normal hair, so they catch the light when at the correct angle.

As another thought of bonus: maybe, just maybe, people will start realizing how old I actually am. I'm still mistaken for a teenager on a regular basis, but I'm 34. Hopefully some white hair will take some confusion away. :D

Now the only trick will be trying to keep my hairdresser from noticing. She'll probably try me into a chair and force me to dye it if she notices.

61 here and not loving the aging process. I dye my hair because all the dingy grays do make me look older. However, I have a more white than gray streak up in my bangs that I sometimes keep when I'm dyeing the rest. My hair has always been difficult and it's thinning more on top which makes for some even more difficult styling, but I have a great hairstylist who gives me really good cuts that enhance what I do have. I would love it if my hair would go beautifully white, but based on my parents, I think I'm doomed to dingy gray & brown mixed so I'm keeping it dyed for now.
Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

I started discovering some grey hairs about two years ago, just a few scattered bits of silver on top of my head. I like them, though I'm dreading what my mom will say when she sees them. She's been dying her hair since she got the first one, and she's always after me to wear all those special cremes and lotions and tonics that supposedly stop wrinkles but I just can't be bothered.

I won't be sad when I go grey. I've always wanted silver hair.

I have a few, at least I think so. I only found them because I went looking for them, but it's hard to tell - maybe they're just extra super mega blond? I know I have a few really dark ones too, so I guess it evens out. :)
I don't mind going grey, though - actually I'm a bit curious what shade it's going to be.

I follow my grandmother's sage advice:
"If God had meant for us to be gray, then there wouldn't be Miss Clairol."
I have been going gray since I was 12.I was a redhead in my 20's to 35 and then reverted to my childhood color of jet-black. I love my esalon.com haircolor!!!!!!! :D
