Obitsu skeleton compatibility questions...

Postby Vetinari » Fri Jun 13, 2014 9:13 am

Um right... Sasu got his body - a cheap second hand obitsu 55 nearly 1 month and a half ago now (serious bargain - less than half the RRP!) but he shamefully hasn't had much playtime due to the limitations the 55 body has with posing. I mean he looks gorgeous on that body but it has issues...

What internal skeleton parts are easily exchangeable? So for instance - would the old-style hinge joints from the 60cm work for his elbows/knees? Cos I really hate the way his limbs can only go to 90 degree angles... I'd rather have good poseability than looks!

Or would it be possible to just jam the 50cm skeleton in there? Cos I adore the 50cm joints - those internal shoulder blades are really noticeable by their absence! I ended up taking off his vinyl torso parts and was surprised by how different the whole area is in there. That and the 50cm's elbow/knee joints can fold right down without being clunky-looking.

While anything is possible, the vinyl parts are totally different and would require LOTS of modification. So, I would say no. Sorry. You could however, replace the entire arm itself. That would work.

Ah thanks :) I'll try to learn/love his limitations for now - the 55cm boy body really really looks the part at least! I do love the slight chubbiness of his limbs compared to my other shortish dolls, he really looks like a v.young teen (it just bugs me that he can't quite touch his own face!)

Ah, but you can! Raenef has volunteered to show you how. The ball jointed elbow has a center section that slides out to provide additional mobility, the knee joints work that way too.

 ooooooooohhhh! Okies I'm gonna go play with him now! I had no idea that was intentional - I figured it might just be cos he's old! Apparently he was a shop window display doll - though god knows where in the UK has a storefront with Obitsus! His vinyl is a slightly different colour to his joints, the pink seems to have mellowed down a bit - but it does match the gretel head I had waiting around for him perfectly!

Many of the parts of the 55cm and 60cm are interchangeable. There are two styles of elbows/knees in the 60cm, the sliding joint and the ball joint. The 55cm has the ball joint. To swap out the ball joint elbows you would need to replace the elbow joint and both vinyl (exterior) parts of the arm, as the sliding joint and ball joint have different sizes and attachments to their respective joint. Here's a side by side of the sliding joint and the ball joint skeletons and vinyl.

You can easily see the differences in those parts.

Cos I really hate the way his limbs can only go to 90 degree angles... I'd rather have good poseability than looks!

The opposite was chosen for the 55cm body. Many of the vinyl parts were extended over the ball part of the joint. This makes for a smoother looking body but at the sacrifice of range of motion. A quick fix for partially remedying the range of motion issue is to trim the vinyl that over laps these joints. This is not recommended to the faint of heart (or people who don't want to pay shipping on replacement parts).

Or would it be possible to just jam the 50cm skeleton in there?

As Zirconmermaid said, the two bodies/skeletons are largely incompatible. It has been noted that the spine of the 50cm will fit in the 55/60cm body, but that's about it. As she said, you can swap out the entire arm from the shoulder joint on down. For many years my girl Diamond was on a 55cm body. When she wore short sleeves she used the more attractive 55cm arms. When she wore long sleeves she used the sliding joint arms for better range of motion.

Ah! Thanks for the detailed info K2! I think I'll put in an order with parabox for some arm parts next time an excuse to order from them rolls around. Just swapping those out occasionally like you suggest would probably solve the bulk of my issues with him - and possibly some spare vinyl parts to experiment with trimming. :? But I had a hell of a nervous time of it just following the guidelines for the eyes of the default 55 head - so it's 50/50 as to if I'll dare give it a shot!
