I find the usual range of materials works fine - MSC or Purity Seal for the under/over spraying and watercolour pencils, pastels and watercolours for the face-up. As it's a form of nylon iirc, you could get away with a wider range of materials which are unlikely to hurt the face, but may prove hard to remove (alcohol inks stain permanently, as do some dyes, for example).
There is a bit more texture on the face than you'll be used to, but I've never found it too noticeable. And unless you asked for her not to come with one, she'll come with a basic face-up anyway. The one thing that is about 10 times easier doing a face-up on a Makie than a bjd is that their eyebrows are slightly raised, so you don't have the fun of trying to make sure both eyebrows are in the same place, same sort of width and length and so on!.
If you use water based products then you just need soap and water to remove mistakes. They're dishwasher safe too, apparently (never tried as don't have a dishwasher!). I've used nail varnish remover on a test bit with no ill effects (left it sitting in some overnight).
