How did everyone get into collecting 1/6 dolls?

Barbie, Jenny, Fashion Royalty, Obitsu and 1/6 resins - basically anything 10-12inch/21-27cm or in the neighborhood.

I started mine for drawing, too. Did you stay at drawing?

I noticed my 1:1 life really sucked up any time I could give to drawing, but my action doll hobby grew in spite of that.

I do draw manga once in a while but my 1/6 hobby and RL keep me more busy. :D

I grew up loving Barbie, I had a ton of dresses and that barbie dream house that folds up when I was little (this has since gone back in the closet). I lost interest for a year or two until one Christmas my parents bought me this really beautiful Barbie with cherry red lips and a velvet body suit, she was so beautiful, I just loved her. I kept her for years until a friend of mine broke her when I was about 12. After that I lost interest in dolls for a really long time.

Then when I was around 16 I discovered anime and Slayers, and found the Italian version of the Lina Inverse doll on eBay, I bought her immediately and while I was waiting for her to arrive from Italy I dug all of my old doll stuff out of my closet.
When she finally arrived She was spoiled rotten and it completely re-opened the hobby to me again. I started looking at improving qualities of doll bodies, and found re-rooting, re-paints, and all kinds of fun mods, and then I found Obitsus and BJD's soon after.

I wound up re-rooting her, re-doing her eyes, and putting her on an Obitsu body. Then she seemed lonely, so I found her a nice male doll that I made into Dynast Grauscherra (Fairly obscure Slayers character), then I thought that a child doll would be cute, then it needed a friend....and it just kept going.

I now have I think over 20 1/6th scale dolls (With Lina doll still being the favorite and mot spoiled of all), with plans to get at -least- 5 more, and 2 dolls I plan to get new bodies for.
So, I don't see myself losing interest in the hobby again for awhile.

maywong That's actually how I first got a "hyperarticulated" doll, it's a grey artist's model. I don't draw often anymore due to my injury but still, I bought it with artistic inclinations. :)

Mary Kathryn I adore obitsus too, honestly they're my favourite design of doll. There is so much to do with them!!! I also had a ton of barbies when I was younger too, I should have known when they came up having jobs and lives that I was a future doll-nut in the making. X3;;

YandereToyBox Ahh, I did a quick search and noticed Ai Enma is in the neighbourhood of $1,000, no wonder you chose some other obitsus!! ^^;;; Also, another Ciel Phantomhive owner!! <3 I happened to get REALLY lucky and found someone selling their MIB "special edition" Ciel that comes with his anime-accurate shoes and the skull cane with tophat and cape. I also bought one that I'm turning into Alois Trancy, and I'm turning a Sebastian into Claude. It's turning out to be a big project. <_<

If you don't mind me asking, what parts are you using for your custom? :) I assume it's Ai Enma?

Alopecia no Hime I always love seeing people's doll collections set out!!!! Mine is in such disarray that taking pictures is next to impossible.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WCyV_W81SLY/T ... layer1.jpg <---I could have sworn I saw a doll dressed up as one of these characters before!! I wonder, was it yours? X3;;

Do you mind me asking who the doll with the shiny silver hair is in your picture!? I adore the face.

As for it snowballing fast...doesn't it always? XDDD

Linainversetsg Oh wow, you learn something new every day!! I had no idea they made an Italian Lina Inverse doll!! Wow, I haven't thought about Slayers in forever!! I just checked and found one on Ebay, too cool! :> I just recently found out not long ago that they made dolls for a series I adore but NEVER thought they'd make dolls for. It was one of those "never really made it out of Japan" dolls, but I managed to snag them. :) So I know that satisfying feeling.

Do you mind showing me your customizing of Lina (and your other Slayers doll)? :D I always find it fascinating seeing older dolls redone and given new life!! What other dolls do you have, if you don't mind me asking? ^___^

P.S. Sorry for like...neglecting my own thread guys. Health issues. <_<

Sure! I'd be happy to share them. i'm sorry for the delayed post but it's the holidays season so I've been busy busy. Dynast is currently in mid make over so I'll try and wrap him up and post some pictures.

They made 4 different character dolls I believe, They made Lina, Amelia, Gourry, and Rezo. I only ever had an interest in Lina though XD.
The Japanese character dolls are always so pretty, I have the Japanese Lina doll too and I adore her.
Just a word of caution on the Italian dolls, They do have a slim chance of having factory defects with the hair. One that I ordered had horrible hair. It was kind of waxy and the ends would get pale and turn white like when plastic gets too strained. It didn't seem to matter how much I trimmed off the ends would just get like that again, which is why she wound up getting re-rooted.

As for dolls I have? In 1/6th scale I have 2 27cm Obitsu girls (one is the Linadoll), a 23cm Obitsu girl named Cia (I so need to finish rooting her already, but I LOVE her face!) A male 27cm Obitsu doll (Dynast), an 11cm doll with a custom head (I'm not happy with it's shape but it was pretty good for my first try), the Japanese Lina doll, A Picco neemo (linadoll's "Daughter"), A second Lina inverse italian doll but she doens't look anything at all like Lina inverse anymore. (I ordered a second one when the leg of my first doll broke before I knew of Obitsu, she will also be going onto an Obitsu body eventually). Other than that I have a bunch of off brand dolls with adult and children that are all in the 1/6th scale line.

I plan to make a few more dolls that will be related to my slayers dolls, and a couple other character dolls.

I am so sorry to hear you're having health issues! I hope you start feeling better and have a wonderful holiday season!

Thank you for the health well wishes, but unfortunately those just seem to be getting worse and worse. But, that's besides the point in this thread.

I'd love to see the pictures of your dolls!! XD, as for the hair issue, older dolls seem to have weird "defects" all the time. Due to either a constrained budget or just pure laziness I'm stuck completely dremeling and sanding a doll's forearms down plus a repaint because his character has white, long fingered demon like hands while the rest of him is all "I'm completely a Bishounen" so the company put what I dubbed "oven mitts" on him instead of creating a custom lower arm sculpt. (http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/swi ... 36693.jpeg UGH THIS IS GOING TO BE SUCH A BIG PAIN IN THE ASS TO FIX.)

So yeah, older dolls, not exactly perfect. XDD

I feel so silly, all my dolls in progress are characters from various animes. <__< I have exactly ONE original character left over from my younger years that I would love to do, but the anime ones are eating up all my money at the moment. I think I got a case of "What, no 12'' character dolls!? LET'S FIX THAT IMMEDIATELY!" syndrome. XDD Poor SetsunaKou's got like...an embarrassing amount of custom orders from me, plus I'm working on my own customs when health permits, which sadly is very, very little right now. I don't have the energy to sit and do a faceup.

Anyway, whenever you're ready, pictures ahoy! :D

it all started for me back in 2001 with TOYNAMI corp's Tenchi Muyo 1/6 doll series.

i had fallen in love with Ayeka Masaki Jurai, one of the two girls in the love triangle
with the titular main character (Tenchi Masaki) and an actual doll of her was just what the doctor ordered
for me, inspiring me to begin to learn how to sew, in order to satisfy my budding desire
to see her in clothing of my personal taste.

i made many, many articles of 1/6 clothing for her over the years, from like 2002/2007ish,
learning and refining the craft on the fly, and by the time i graduated to the "true" 27cm. 1/6
of the OBITSU body, beginning with my Miku Asahina in 2009ish, my sewing skills were plenty ready for the task.

today, i still have those old Tenchi Muyo dolls, a covey of girls all based on the 27cm. OBITSU,
and a very rare 12/13in. TSUKUDA HOBBY Shaorin Shichiri that i believe i just might have bought back in '08
from none other than the aforementioned "SetsunaKou"

I grew up playing with Barbies--mostly during the Mod era. I was in college, and not collecting dolls, when the Superstar face was introduced. Got interested in Barbies again when I brought my two remaining dolls home from my parents' house, after I was married.

I was on-again off-again after that (though I did buy Barbies for my daughters, and the occasional one for me... ) A few years ago I discovered doll picture stories on Flickr, and I just had to do that too! And I learned to exchange heads, and I branched out into other 1:6 dolls, both vintage and new. (Dollikin! Juku Couture! Volks!...)

Most of mine are still Barbie and family, though (well, mostly family--I don't think I own a Superstar-faced girl, though there are some in the house, and I do have a Generation Girl Barbie or two). I'm trying to get everyone rebodied so they'll at least have jointed elbows, but it's a slow process.

I've loved Barbies since I was little, and still do. I guess their size and all the possibilities are part of the attraction for me. Not too big to be cumbersome, not too tiny. And wow, what I would have given back then for some of the dolls we have now. Movie character dolls--a Mr. Spock with pointy ears--Legoolas--oh, my. I get to enjoy them now, though, so that's awesome.
Just enjoying my dolls...

Tasuke- Your collection is so adorable!! :D Glad to see another big time anime dork on here. XD (I know, I know, we all collect some of them but somehow my collection has ended up being basically 99% anime related dolls!)

ocean-daughter- Oh wow, it sounds like you have a long and rich history with your love of dolls! That is so incredible! :D If you can, make sure to post some of your 1/6 brood on here! :) I would love to see your collection. I agree with you that we're lucky to get the amazing character dolls that are released now! So many gorgeous choices *sighs*. ;)

Hi Caramel, yes, I'll be sure to post some pictures of my dolls! I'll try to track down the pics I took, or I'll just take some new ones.

Yes, I feel that Barbie and her friends enriched my life and the time I spent with my friends...they were such a vehicle for imagination and possibility. They can really be whatever you want them to.

ETA I tried to add an image from Snapfish, but all I get is the word "image." Am I missing something?
Just enjoying my dolls...
