Sorry for threadjacking, but since it sounds like the hairdo you're going for is pretty similar to what I tried to do (sort of a traditional men's haircut?), I figured I might as well show how mine turned out. Those two tutorials I posted were the ones I found most useful.
This is what was left of his original hair - note how it's only rooted to just above his ears.
I rerooted him with grey hair and kept the painted sideburns (so I didn't have to deal with putting really short hairs there).
Then I gave it roughly the right shape under hot tap water and cut it. No pics, but I started with putting it all in a bunch on top of his head, then let down a thin layer at a time and cut it. It's the same as cutting a person's hair, you just need to figure out how to divide it in horisontal layers (not a row of plugs at a time, that's too much). It takes a bit of patience and probably practice (I just cut wherever it looked sort of right).
I used way too thick hairplugs around the forehead (like 40+ hairs). Luckily, since there's hardly any hair rooted in the back the hair still didn't become too thick. You can't really tell he's bald under either.
When I felt like I was done I wrapped a strip of fabric tight around his head to keep the hair flat, then poured boiling water over it and let dry (and repeat for correcting mistakes). It has kept pretty well so far, but I might try some gel if it doesn't.
