Unfortunately I don't have any good tips, but this tutorial is pretty good: http://www.dolls-n-daggers.com/Dolls/Fo ... opic=926.0. It's actually for a pixie cut on a 16'' doll so it may not be exactly what you're after, but I thought it had some good points for cutting doll hair in general.

Sorry for not responding to this sooner!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TUTORIAL LINK!! I really needed to see it being done, you know what I mean? Combined with Setsunakou's amazing advice I feel like this is a reality now!! <333 :D

Glad to be of help. :)
Oh, and and I forgot this one: http://www.dolls-n-daggers.com/Dolls/OOAKtipshair.php
This one has a good explanation of some basic technique that I thought was really useful and easy to start with.

Sorry for threadjacking, but since it sounds like the hairdo you're going for is pretty similar to what I tried to do (sort of a traditional men's haircut?), I figured I might as well show how mine turned out. Those two tutorials I posted were the ones I found most useful.

Image
This is what was left of his original hair - note how it's only rooted to just above his ears.

Image
I rerooted him with grey hair and kept the painted sideburns (so I didn't have to deal with putting really short hairs there).

Image
Then I gave it roughly the right shape under hot tap water and cut it. No pics, but I started with putting it all in a bunch on top of his head, then let down a thin layer at a time and cut it. It's the same as cutting a person's hair, you just need to figure out how to divide it in horisontal layers (not a row of plugs at a time, that's too much). It takes a bit of patience and probably practice (I just cut wherever it looked sort of right).

I used way too thick hairplugs around the forehead (like 40+ hairs). Luckily, since there's hardly any hair rooted in the back the hair still didn't become too thick. You can't really tell he's bald under either. :)

Image
When I felt like I was done I wrapped a strip of fabric tight around his head to keep the hair flat, then poured boiling water over it and let dry (and repeat for correcting mistakes). It has kept pretty well so far, but I might try some gel if it doesn't.

It's actually pretty uneven and relies completely on the boil perm to keep the shape. I just decided I don't care. :)

So - I'm no expert, but those were my experiences in 1/6 hairdressing.

Anderson'sAllPurpose- That looks great, and way better than what I could do.

Thanks, but it's actually a lot simpler than it looks. :D Since it's mostly just a thin curtain of hair hanging down over the back of his head, it's mostly gravity and the boil perm that gives it the right shape. I think if you rooted a full hair of head and cut it short, it would be a bit harder to get it to look right. I'll try that next time.

Please, threadjack some more! Yes, that is basically the exact freaking same haircut I'm looking for, with a few minor variations. Thank you SO MUCH for posting your process!! May I ask what type of hair you used? I'm quite curious! :) I know there are pros and cons to both saran and nylon hair but I'm thinking of using the nylon hair since it holds styles better. :D Also, I take it that you rerooted only to around the ears? (That's what it looks like from the pictures?) I need to root sideburns into my doll but same basic idea, and it is so incredibly nice seeing it executed here. <333 Argghh I wish I could think of a better word than thank you! The English language really needs a word that's like a step up from "thanks".

No problem. :) Just remember, I've done this exactly once and am by no means an expert...!

I forgot to say I used nylon, which I originally chose because it seemed the easiest to handle for a beginner. I've never tried saran but I think the hairs are thinner too. And yes, I only rooted to above his ears (like in the before picture), so unfortunately I don't have any tips for the sideburns (except it would probably be easier to paint them). Maybe try to find pics of a doll with rooted sideburns and see how they were done?
