Sailor Moon Crystal!

Postby britbrat18 » Tue Jul 01, 2014 7:26 pm

Is anyone else excited for the premiere of the new Sailor Moon anime? Just four days! I am so excited! I know there was some hype here when it was first announced. I've seen the trailer and some stills(not all though, trying not to spoil myself too much!) And it looks amazing! Being the fan girl that I am, I most excited that Mamoru looks so good! The art really does look beautiful, and Kotono Mitsuishi is Usagi again.

Could I have used any more exclamation marks? (and now I sound slightly like Chandler Bing...)

For those interested in watching it, here is a link to places that will be airing it as it airs in Japan. First episode is Saturday July 5 at 7:00 pm(in Japan) (6:00 am EST)- I gotta get up really early...

And an article about it with the trailer attached.

Also! Let's not forget the re-dub of the 1990's Sailor Moon by Viz, that will be the complete series, Stars for the first time in the US! All 200 episodes, movies, and specials!! Viz is supposed to announce more info and possibly the new cast, this Saturday at Anime Expo. And Viz is also airing the Japanese episodes, subbed in english on their site. Two every Monday, we are now on Episode 16.

Link to Viz if you are interested in the subs-http://www.viz.com/anime/streaming/sailor-moon

And about the re-dub-http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-05-16/viz-licenses-original-sailor-moon-anime-franchise.

Okaym, long winded rambling is done!

Oh, wow~ I've been anticipating SM Crystal but didn't know anything about the redub.

I'm actually pretty disappointed that they are using a new English cast though. The originals were PERFECT! I can see remaking an uncut version but with the same voice actresses! Especially Serena (USagi)! Terri Hawkes was perfect!

I heard the new dub actress at the end of that preview link you posted and she was just awful! :sighs: I hope that at least the Outer senshi will be better voiced.

I guess, overall, I'm excited but also wary, since I really loved the original English dub. Also, I doubt the Sailor Stars season can really be well done in English. I mean, the Starlights! That's going to be a tough one for English voice actors to believably accomplish. The Japanese actresses were perfect. I don't mean to compare---that wouldn't be kind, but it's just that I know I'm so acquainted with their Japanese voices, the English just will not be 'them' to me. I just bought the Amnesia anime dvd set and set the audio to English, just to see how they massacred it. I wasn't far off, two of the main five voices were awful, one was okay, one was halfway decent and one was actually better than the Japanese voice! :laughs: I love both Eng/Jap languages so I am not biased one against the other, truly.

It's funny, for Sailor Moon, I prefer the original English over the Japanese; for Gundam Wing, I prefer the English over the Japanese, but it's close; for Yu-Gi-OH!, I prefer the English to the Japanese, but again, it's a close call; for Final Fantasy X and X-2, I like the English more than the Japanese, mainly due to Auron being 1000x better in English. The rest are all fine in both languages!
But for La Corda, Harukanaru and Amnesia, I really can ONLY like the Japanese. Any English voices just could not hold a candle! (Except for that one guy in Amnesia who was better in Eng than Jap).

So, deviating from my long rant, I will say I'm excited enough for Sailor Moon Crystal but rather dubious of the redub. One thing I am a bit...annoyed about Crystal is that they kept USagi's seiyuu Mitsuishi Kotono, but NONE of the others. That's so cruel! Either keep all or change all, I say. But other than that, I'm interested in seeing this reboot. ^^

This is coming from a HUGE SM fan (Not kidding, we have almost every doll in multiple sizes and brands, all the dvds, all the vhs, 1/6 resin models of each senshi, all the figures, all the plush, all the gashapon, etc, etc, etc) ----have been so since 1995 and still continue to be so, so I can really relate to your feelings!!! Let's hope that Crystal will be good!

I'm looking forward to the redub, I do have good memories of the original and some dubbed and subbed videos. Having read the Manga and a role playing and episode guide there are some parts and whole episodes we've missed out on. I can see it like Battle of The Planets/Gatchaman. I have what few BOTP DVDs I could get my hands on and when an unedited redub that followed the original scripts came out I bought it and love both.

Not like the original was Macekered like Robotech.

The re-dub is definitely surprising! I'm just excited that the US is finally getting everything for the anime that it missed, I'm interested in seeing how those episodes pan out in English.*knocks on wood* It is sad about the new voice actors, I'm hoping the new ones can do it justice, and who knows maybe we will be blown away. I'm not as huge fan of the dub (as I am the original Japanese), but I do have a fondness for it because that was what Sailor Moon was to me when I first became a fan. And I watch it every now and then. I for one am going to miss Vince Corazza, and Stephanie Beard, though, I still remember the "I won't exist!!" shout in her voice.

I totally get where you are coming from about the voices though! Sometimes you love one person in that so much, it is hard to like someone else in that role. First, I totally agree that Matt McKenzie as Auron is totally awesome, love, love his voice. And I get what you mean about preferring Japanese for one thing, and English for the other(like you, I like both, and switch, swap for different things). For example I love the Tales of Symphonia dub, Cam Clarke as Kratos is amazing, and it's so hard to turn to Japanese, because he just doesn't sound like Kratos to me anymore(though that's not saying the original voice actor is bad or anything).

I am glad that Kotono is back as Usagi, though I am sad the others couldn't/wouldn't come back I knew a few of them expressed interest, but for whatever reason they recast them. It is kind of cruel though to single her out, but I'm guessing that since she is the star, that they thought there would be a huge backlash if it wasn't the same person?

But I'm glad you are excited like I am about Crystal!! :D And I rambled again.

Dollykim: Here's hoping that it turns out well so you can enjoy it in full! I agree that the US missed out on a lot the first time. I've heard of Gatchaman, but I've never seen it, so I sadly can't compare that to anything. I kinda liked the English Robotech, though I've never seen the Japanese one, but I've been debating on watching it from what I've heard.

Oh wow, I was not aware of the re-dub project... the old English dub is godawful, and I'll be interested to see the new one.

Also, I am excited for Crystal!

I am definitely looking forward to this. I can't say I'm a HUGE Sailor Moon fan, simply because I haven't watched it since they first aired the dub on TV (though I have extremely fond memories). The re-dub is something I will definitely be checking out, though like a lot of people expressed I'll miss the original voice actors! Though I for one am definitely looking forward to seeing it uncut and unedited. The ridiculous "cousin" bit, and changing Zoicite (err...forget his Japanese name oh my gosh! I just looked it up the other day! *faceplam*) from male to female, among a million other little things, that's part of the reason dubs get kind of a bad rep. We're mature enough to handle the fact that there are lesbians and gay men in our anime! *Fake gasp of surprise*

As for Sailor Moon Crystal: Oh. My. God. The artwork on this is BEYOND stunning and I cannot wait for when they release the first TV Animation artbook for it. I will be watching this for sure!

Edit: Watched the re-dub trailer. Hah, I have to say I snickered at their blatant use of all the most "controversial" characters to really hammer the point across that yes, they're not gonna screw it up. The tiny clip at the very end isn't enough for me to judge the the VA's quality, but the fact that Naoko Takeuchi will personally approve everyone makes me happy. The One Piece redub did the same thing (the original 4Kids dub was actually so terrible that the creator pulled the rights for it), having Oda Eiichiro personally give his approval for all of the characters' English VAs. :) Much better redub, so despite my nostalgia for the original VAs for Sailor Moon, I'm looking forward to hearing the re-dub as well!

BoTP is a chopped dub of Gatchaman but they use the same beautiful Tatsunoko original animation. Unlike Robotech they used the original scripts, or translations of, and just Americanized a few things to make it go down better on late 70s-early 80s generally aimed at kids TV. I'd recommend go strait for the full box set redub peppered with the occasional Sandy Frank episode with Casey Kasem. Skip other versions. Robotech has had a restoration full set too and there are DVDs of the 3 series the animation was taken from.

I'm glad there's going to be approval on Sailor Moon, I liked the idea of One Piece but felt it wasn't coming out right. I have the original Sailor Moon manga so I just need to make the time to read it ~wishes it was available in e format~ The Doom Tree episodes were fun. I had such a crush on the Moonlight Knight and my Teen Skippers would dress up as Scouts. Hopefully it will make it to DVD too. Voice wise some of them did start to get to me but it was after my TBI and my noise sensitivity had been turned up to 11.

I'm curious what you mean about One Piece! :) When you say "it wasn't coming out right", are you talking about the 4Kids dub (this is the strange as hell one where Sanji sounds like a clown and he has a digitally edited lollypop habit instead of his constant cigarette  ), the redub, or the actual show itself that you didn't feel came out right? :D

Edit: Hah, speaking of the 4Kids dub versus the Funimation dub:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0iYSF5udzA
My favourite bit has to be in the 4kid's dub "Don't hit me!" "I wasn't gonna hit you." with a terrible cutscene that clearly shows they cut something out versus Funimation's "Why did you hit me!?" "Because I felt like it."

I'm talking the 4Kids stuff, everything they came out with was a turn off, especially after I read the summaries of the manga and original series. I'd check out a decent One Piece when I'm in the mood.

To get back to Sailor Moon unless they had decided to make up their own scripts there wasn't very much they could do to mess it up. The Lights suffered the most with not knowing how to handle their "gimmick" (don't want to spoil that) but most of the edits or changes seemed to be of a similar nature and cutting out sex but leaving all the violence they wanted.

I'm so excited for Sailor Moon Crystal and the re-dub. The original Sailor Moon English dub was the first anime I ever watched. My sister and I actually put the VCR on timed record so we could watch it later! XD
