Mad Props, Yo. <-------- a thread about props!!!

Postby Trethowan » Fri Aug 08, 2014 7:07 am

Hey, let's talk props. I'm in the mood to spice up my doll habitat. ha.

I'm thinking about floor lamps and coffee tables and had some ideas. Finding scale items for a dollhouse isn't exactly easy and I've not found the right kind of modern coffee table for my uber-SD couch. I was actually thinking about making one out of a cutting board. They're pretty, relatively inexpensive, and light weight. I thought I could surely slap some legs onto one of those. (Famous last words)

And I need a floor lamp or two, to put behind the couch. I've got an old desk lamp that just needs a smaller shade.

Exciting times!

Do you guys have any prop designs in the works?

Speaking of cool props, have you seen Donna Hawk's chairs? They're specially designed to be built and taken down for doll meets. Transportable chairs that stack flat! Very cool. I'm going to get a throne version for Ivan.

Very cool idea, especially since it's geared specifically for BJDs. I usually find my doll seating at antique stores and most of those older doll chairs and loungers don't have the proper leg room.

I'm always wanting to make proper rooms for my dolls, but I never seem to get around to it lol. I do have a BEAUTIFUL couch my mom bought me for Christmas that's sort of the center piece prop in my doll cabinet right now.

Oh! And I bought a mouse pad that looks like a Persian rug at a flea market a couple of weeks ago for $1-it's perfectly in scale with some of my boys

I'd like to have a couch or something to sit the ball joints on. The 70cm twins are in their boxes most of the time because there literally is no place to put them.

Outside of art supplies, or iStuff like I have, props and junk are generally for the 1/6 scale crew. I had to make that choice early in the doll game or their stuff would crowd me out. Exceptions are made, Xavier has a coffin and can have just about anything Halloween he wants, and Liberace would get his piano.

Some of it comes down to quality or if it's in scale. They make a sewing machine and stuff for American Girl knock-offs but the machine isn't in scale.

Mouse pad rug sounds like a great idea. I love the idea of a doll cabinet. One of these days I'll sort out a safe place to store mine.

DollyKim, do you think it's easier to find props for 1:6 than it is the larger scales? Seems like the cutest items are always 1:12 or 1:6.

If I didn't count the Re Ment and Megahouse stuff I splurged on a few years ago, and it's not exactly any scale, then subtract the Barbie stuff... The bulk of my dust collectors would still be in the 1/6 scale range but I've always had dolls that size and never actively gone after 1/12. While 1/12 is the traditional dollhouse size the easier to find stuff doesn't work for me.

This day and age it's easy to get stuff that will work for the 1/6 scale dolls. Some of my pieces are closer to 1/8 but I figure what's there is there. I haven't actively searched for anything recently, aside from the Apple products. You have to get creative too, two members of my iCult are using cosmetic mirrors and one a toy from the 99 Cent Store, another laptop I have is a holiday ornament. It's all about the dimensions of the prop working with the size of the user.

Get down to Airfix 1/72 and your toys can have toys. These are reissue British Guards vs Star Trek Innerspace.

Nowhere is safe!! MUHAHAHAHAH! Props... OH yeah! Hazel has everything! OK, she doesn't have a pool, but she could. I find a lot of things at thrift stores, antique malls, and shows. I also love the American Girl and Our Generation furniture for the SD sizes. My MSDs actually inhabit the same world as Hazel, so they use those too. Christmas Ornaments make great toys, Rockem Sockem Robots? I have way too many teasets in all scales too. The small Obitsu usually get Barbie or Monster High furniture and props. And I love Donna's chairs! I have one for going to doll meets.
It's all about Hazel!

if I ever drag my lazy butt to a doll meet, I'll get one of Donna's love-seats so I can plop my boys down on an actual chair.
