Annabelle might have been changed because Raggedy Anne, or at least her look, might be under copy write. The sewing pattern we have said so. Or because they don't want to upset people who have and love them. As freaky as the Greedy was I still have generally good memories of the cartoons. As much as I love the Child Catcher and what he stands for I wouldn't want a kid to be afraid of their doll because they thought it was evil because a movie said so.

Fighting back in your nightmares is a great way to battle them. Try derailing any uncomfortable dreams with another train of thought, it's your brain and you control it.

I tend to end up shapeshifting into a dragon form similar to Bahamut of Final Fantasy 8. First time I did that, it broke a long time colored wheel nightmare. As long as it works, I ain't complaining.

^^^^ This. Not only can't help you stop having bad dreams, it can also lead to some pretty awesome ones after a while.

As I was approaching adolescence my mum warned me I would probably start having nightmares - things like where I was in a house with a monster or unseen attacker and couldn't turn lights on; or where I couldn't run away. The only advice she gave me was to remember the morning after that they were just dreams and nothing to do with reality. The first time it happened my brain basically said "sod this for a game of soldiers" So when I got stuck in a house and none of the lights worked I pulled out my torch. When I couldn't run away, I flew. And so on. It was something I was aware of doing to start with, but over the years since then has become an unconscious thing. As a result I've had maybe two nightmares in my life, and less than a handful of really bad dreams. I do have a lot of weird/surreal ones, and a lot of action/adventure ones though.

I saw part of The Fog as a kid and had nightmares about creepy fog like stuff. Most of mine are more on the anxiety side and left overs from unhappier times in my life. Movie effects don't get me much because I know what goes in to them.

Now something well written, well acted, that's creepy. Some films like The Shining do things to make the sets unsettling.

My problem is that I rarely remember more than vague snatches of my dreams. I remember if they were good or bad, though!

Meep! Nothing spooky for me, thanks.

I have always stayed away from scary movies and such. I refused to read the Goosebumps series as a kid. Anyone remember that? Covers were plenty creepy, thank you. Only creepy anything I can do is Shaun of the Dead. That's it. I love that movie. :D I should dig it out to watch on Halloween...

Shaun of the Dead is brilliant!

I can't hear Queen's Don't Stop Me Now without thinking of the fight scene in the pub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4tVH7BPb-Q

I've seen spooky dreams as interesting story fodder, but shapeshifting into a dragon... that'd be awesome. xD

I had a dream once where I was being chased by some freaky murderer guy. The last thing I remember about the dream is that I'd run to my house and was hiding inside, but I knew he was going to be rolling into my driveway in a car any minute. Scared to pieces, there, just waiting in my house when suddenly it occurred to me that I was dreaming. So when I saw the guy's car start to turn into my driveway, I thought to myself "Oh yeah? I know how to stop this!" I snapped my eyes open, woke up, and went, "HA-HAAAAA!" Really fixes the problem pretty quick. xD

But I don't want to wake up and check what time of the night it was, I want to continue sleeping. The dragon effectively destroys the threatening nightmares and some other non scary random thing tends to take over the dream.

However sometimes I dream of videogame characters acting out a storyline, I had to wake up eventually and jot those down.

Dreams are fantastic story fodder! I once had a dream about this gigantic hybrid wolf-sea-creature. Thing was freaky as hell in a really good way. The dream itself, I can still remember it, too. It ended with myself and some friends hiding in a house along the beach, and I see the wolf pass by the window, and then one of my friends goes to open the door and I'm like "NO DON'T!" I try to shut the door but the wolf shoves his head in and clamps his teeth down on my arm and that's when I woke up. After I got done hyperventilating a bit, I grabbed the nearest pen and piece of paper I could find and scribbled down everything I could remember about what the monster looked like.

He is now a creature named Ahngorah, the Chaos Hound in one of my novels. :)
