How would running a free forum become a bread winning job anyway? Advertising fees? Or maybe they're stay at home spouses? Or is it a much easier job then I think? Just curious. Anyone know?
DoA is selling ad-space, so that's one way they gather money - but I suspect that goes mostly fees to keep the site up.
I tried to find information how many moderators DoA has, but couldn't find any. But I suspect that they have quite a lot of them - that way they could keep them as volunteers, doing as much as they are willing to spend time. (This is purely suspection, as I don't have any knowledge about inner workings of DoA.)
I can shed a bit more light on that part. DoA uses the ad space to help pay for the site. The moderators are all volunteers. There are active mods and inactive mods, since almost all of them have full-time jobs, so sometimes you can't be helping out for multiple hours everyday during certain parts of the year.
Sorry we can't give you a concrete estimate of how long it takes to be approved, Lottie. But that site is massive, so all of the approval stuff takes awhile. I haven't found it to be full of drama (I've been on there since 2006) but it's strict. I mean, with that many members actively posting, you have to have way more rules. But for conversations and camaraderie, I stick to the Sanctuary. There are some great tutorials, though!
