Talking yourself out of a doll

I think I treat some dolls like souvenirs of characters I like. If I didn't have the Trek action figures there'd most likely be dolls of them hanging around. By the time I got around to Doctor Who most of the ranks were and still are filled out by past dolls who revealed they like to Cosplay. Half of my new doll wants have been solved with a new costume for an old friend.

Considering the way some of us are, the cosplay route does cuts down a lot of dolls who either have or don't have officially sanctioned doll made. I don't own a 1/6 Leon Kennedy or Pulips Luka Megurine when my dolls were cosplaying them, but oddly enough i have Figma Luka. My existing dolls appreciate getting new clothes.

I think I need to find a way to prevent the figmas population from exploding, since I don't play with them as much as my dolls.

This time, I was not able to talk myself out of the doll but I do feel a lot better about this purchase because of all of your comments. I'm not going crazy. He will fit in and hopefully I won't feel I need a doll again any time soon. Though... winter is coming.

Time seems to be the most effective way to talk me out of a doll. .___. I am also one of those folks who prefers to shell characters, so usually it's the reverse for me: I think of a character that I REALLY want to bring to the table, so I go out and look for sculpts that would match that character. I rarely find a sculpt that I fall in love with first and purchase with no context. _xD

What really gets to me though is that I know if I buy a new doll, then that doll will be nekkid for lord knows how long. =__= Because then I have to get a wardrobe for it, too, fffff... Usually over time I lose the enthusiasm for the doll. So that's how I know that I'm just having a passing fancy. Alternatively, if I keep getting an egging urge to shell a character, that's usually when my hand will spring. I might have the opposite problem. It actually takes me a really long time to talk myself into purchasing a doll...

I guess I don't really shell characters. Maybe that would help. <3 I do think about the kind of doll I would like though. I don't want dolls who seem too much like ones I already own. I don't like the idea of keeping them hidden away either so I need space for the doll. I like the smaller sizes as most of the play time I have with them is at my desk. And of course money is always a factor.

I would have a lot more larger dolls if money is not an issue. Another tip you can attempt is to save up for what the current doll that you want most. If its not a limited edition you could take a year or two longest(i.e Iplehouse Luna for me). By the time you hit half your target amount, do you still want that doll or have you found another doll(I heard rumors that Dollfie Dream Alna might get re-release) that you want much much more to transfer that savings to?

By the time I hit my target amount, I found that I didn't like semi-white Alna when her shop pics came out (prefer normal edition since that who I fell in like with).

If for whatever reason that you hit your target amount and found that you don't like that doll anymore. Well, you have a sun of money of which you can buy other things or save it for the next doll that comes by with the 'Buy me! Buy me!' routine.

Talking yourself out of a doll is something I imagine would be easier when it comes to larger BJDs and other more expensive dolls - for better or worse. With cheap playline 1/6 I guess impulse buys happen a lot easier. Of course money will always be an issue - mostly I try to solve the problem by only wanting dolls I can afford. The risk is you might end up buying 5 cheap dolls instead of the one you decided is out of your price range - but there's something to be said for the element of retail therapy too.

When I really have to talk myself out of a doll, I tell myself I'll buy it for a ridiculous sum on ebay when I'm rich.

That would be me during my first 3 years on returning to dolls. by now there's like 5 small dolls to one big one...You know... if don't buy those five lower range dolls you could afford a higher range doll.

...Ok I'm sorry, not helping much in the talking out of dolls bit. its a bit tough since I got the big ones I wanted and am kinda back to building up on smaller ones. Opps

Not that my own record with this is very good! But my preferred technique is to give it a few months of doing other stuff, and seeing if you still like the sculpt as much as you did when conniptions/rapture happened the first time around.
It's helped me keep my wishlist in the lowest end of the double-digits scale; which I admit isn't great, but it's far better than it would be without all the cutting back! (I'm not going to bring up shelling characters, since my group of them are the stereotypical cast of thousands. I'm trying to stick to main characters only )

See how many of your characters could be squashed in to actor archetypes. I discovered I have a library of general faces I was using in my work and they became my core Volks and Obitsus.

The last ones I added were Zoltan and Sidara to be ambiguously brown. He's named after the strongest/most favorite of my AB guys, her name means Star, and he already has a couple of costumes. Rian has already been the Greatest American Hero, Young Sherlock Holmes, and does a great Brian Henson impersonation. When I was playing Doctors it was great to find I already had a River Song, Georgia Moffet, and one girl got the name Olive just for being here.
