Alternatives to resin BJDs?

It's possible to un-yellow resin. On DoA someone has come up with a complicated chemical concoction that does just that.

You can also disguise the fact that it's yellow by doing an all-over body blush of pink.

If you sprayed him all over with MSC or some other fixative/protector, it might not be the resin that's yellow, it might just be the MSC. Cleaning him with 90% isopropyl alcohol and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser might reveal that he's actually fine.

Any doll that looks like an ABJD but doesn't turn yellow is awesome for me.

I had a lovely Bambicrony doll that I kept in a box, out of sunlight. Even in the box, her body turned yellow (but not her head, arms or legs, strangely). It was just heartbreaking. I'm shocked that I was able to sell her. When I sold her, I gave full disclosure about the yellowing and sold her pretty cheaply, so I lost a lot of money on her. I guess her new owner knew how to fix the yellowing issue.

I love the beauty of resin, but I'm a huge fan of Hujoo's ABS plastic dolls. I keep hoping they'll do more beautiful faces, because I don't like some of their faces. I have a couple of their "Hujoo Babies" in ABS, and I absolutely love the material!!! They're really tough, and look just like resin dolls in person. The Hujoo Rose in my avatar is ABS as well.

I heard somewhere that ABS was the same material used to make Lego, and it's super difficult to chip or crack Lego (not impossible, but difficult).

I've saved up enough money to get another doll, and I've been looking at two Hujoo dolls ... Io (58cm tall) or Sara (42cm). I think I might go with Sara.

I really wish more companies would start using ABS.

Yellowing is a by-product of oxidation as well as exposure to UV light, traces of oils from handling, air borne contaminants, and other elements. Where there is oxygen there will be oxidation. The manufacturer's resin formulation can have a lot to do with the amount and speed with which resin yellows. Unless you pack your beauties away in a sealed container filled with argon gas you can expect some yellowing to occur over time.

Yeah, all resin dolls have a chance of yellowing to some extent. It's just the name of the game.

Please don't think I was picking on Bambicrony. I know it's pretty much EVERY resin doll ever, from every company. Resin dolls are so beautiful that I want them anyway. I highly recommend Bambicrony, actually. The dolls are beautifully made and pose well, with lovely, angelic faces.

Anyway, guess what ... I just bought Hujoo Sara this morning! I'll post pics on this forum when she arrives later this week. She comes with a faceup but no eyes. I have eyes in 12mm, 14mm and 16mm to try on her, so it'll be a lot of fun trying different eyes on her when she gets here. I've been told that 16mms are too big, but 14mms should be about perfect. I'll try the 12mms on her, too, just because I prefer a small iris. They might be too small for the eyewells, though.

Actually, don't ALL plastics (resin, vinyl, ABS) yellow? I thought it was just the nature of the beast.

I'm sure most plastic is visibly affected by time and lots of it turns yellow. But vinyl Barbies from the '60s aren't notably yellow, as far as I know. I have some vintage late '60s Barbie heads that still have a pink tone.

It does seem weird to me that this whole industry of BJD makers has built up around resin dolls, charging lifelong-collectible prices for dolls that may turn from stark white to jaundiced banana-yellow within just a few years. I know some dollmakers put UV protection in their resin but as someone pointed out above, oxidization will also cause yellowing.

I mean, I know the reason doll artists still make them in resin is because people still buy resin. And I guess resin may have some qualities that make it easier to cast dolls in it, and it definitely has qualities that make it easier to customize the dolls once they're made.

But this is one of my most consistent sources of cold feet. I fall for a doll, I convince myself that I value it as a work of art and craftsmanship enough to pay several hundred dollars for it, but then I worry about what it's going to look like five years from now. But I have to admit, a well-sculpted BJD body looks a lot nicer to me than an Obitsu or Hujoo body, so I may get over it yet.

My bigger beauty white and normal yellow Dollzones have noticeably changed but my Orientdoll, Puki Puki, and Felixdoll Brownie look good. They've all been out in the same air and the bright white "snowskin" Orientdoll has been on outings. The younger white Dollzone is looking pretty good.

$h*t's gonna happen. It's not what the doll looks like, it's how much you love them. I wouldn't trade my Xavier for anything, he's yellowed because he's one of the earliest made, he slumps because his body joint is wearing down from being held and posed so much. I have a 35 year old Darci with one hand, green stains, a pixie hair cut, and her head falls off, if only she could talk about the fun life she's had...
