Barbie makes, or mocks history?

Postby Greyhaunt » Sun Feb 08, 2015 11:21 pm

I read a lot of history blogs, and I just love this one where the (obviously not a Barbie lover) blogger dug up photos of historical Barbies. Personally, I like his list at the very end of historical barbies he'd like to see someone make :)

I'd like to see the barbies on the list too. The boxed historical barbies are real hit or miss with me, but I've never met a barbie I couldn't walk away from. Maybe I'm not biased enough?

I feel like he's making fun of other people's art and self expression in a not-very-nice way. I noticed that at least one of those looks like a custom someone(possibly a child) actually put together him or herself.

Well, what you have there is a history professor or scholar who knows nothing about dolls basically yes, making fun of the so-called historical barbies which are about as accurate costume wise as most halloween outfits. I don't think he realized that the pre-historic barbie was a personally customized one as most of his choices were official releases. And to his credit he does say that he did not include any of the more ethnic barbies because he felt they were well done and represented their groups accurately.

He could have been much meaner, and if he had been I would never have shared it here.

Don't make me adult, who said I could adult?

I've seen enough Barbie sewing and crochet patterns to irk my inner fashion historian. Let's put Gibson Girl hair on everything "Late Victorian" shall we? Leg O Mutton sleeves for everyone! That cuirass dress needs a really big hat on the back of the head! A lot of it is media that doesn't care and a hard time finding the ones who do or finding people who want to do the research.

That prehistoric Barbie is actually Rock Chic Sindy, it says right there in the photo. In fact she's making me nostalgic for the days when I made my dolls wear rags and fur and live in a muddy ditch.
