DDs And Obitsus

Postby Kirahfaye » Thu Apr 09, 2015 7:11 am

In the past few months Dolfie Dreams have become really popular in my local doll group and we have a small, growing number of them at the meets. They tend to be pricey but also have more variety in facial sculpts, so I was wondering if anyone here has any and what your thoughts on them are? Does anyone have DDs and Obitsus? Or experience with both? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the skin tones don't match for hybridizing, right?

One of these days I'm going to get an anime style vinyl girl. So .... DD or Obitsu?

One of my friends has a whole horde of DD girls. They're all super cute and she really likes them. Of course you know where SOME of us will weigh in on the question. XD

I love DDs, they are my main collection. :) They can in fact be hybrided with Obitsu, the match between DD normal skin and Obitsu white skin is really good. I currently have two such hybrids, a Nanami head on a 55cm male body, and a DDH- 04 head on a 48cm body. A lot of people use the 40cm body instead of the Volks MDD body since the original MDD body was cute but incredibly floppy, and the new MDDIII body is quite a bit more pricey.

Not too many put full DDs and full Obitsus together though, since their heads are a different scale. DD heads are quite a bit bigger. It's not impossible or anything, it just depends on your aesthetic preferences.

Here's Hiroki, my 55cm guy

Hikari, my 48cm girl

This is MDD, 48cm, DDS, and DDIII

The Resin: Nerina (RS sky blue Mei)

The Small Wonder: currently unnamed 11cm Obitsu

The DDs: Ayano, Mitsuki, Akira, Kotone, Selena, Ichigo, Lydia, Hiroki, Kate, Hikari

Yes, Obitsus (kind of obvious) and 2 DD2s, 1 DDDy, 1 MDD.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the skin tones don't match for hybridizing, right?

As mentioned by Jezrah, Obitsu white skin and Volks normal are a pretty close match. Other than heads, most other parts are not compatible. I say that even though I have two DD/Obitsu hybrids (Pinky and Robbie). Both required extensive work not recommended for most owners.

Both Obitsus and DDs have their pros and cons. The biggest pro for DDs is all the licensed anime characters that have been made and will continue to be made in the future. If you are interested in a specific existing anime character DD is the way to go. If you're interested integrating in an existing DD group, DD is the way to go.

The biggest con in my mind is that Volks doesn't provide internal skeleton parts. Their answer for "this part is broken" is "Buy a new body."

I have to admit, personally I think the DD are more "aethetically pleasing". (That is, however, purely based on picture-ogling, I have not yet had the opportunity to handle one of these.) For me, they have a more "refined" look than the Obitsus, if that makes any sense?

However, given the difference in price, and, as victotiovictrix mentioned, the non-availability of parts, I am content with my Obitsu lot. I do not have to be too afraid while handling these girls, as I can buy spares of about any part should I manage to destroy anything (*cough* neck parts *cough*)

Their anime heads are cute, too! ;) The Ai-chan head and Hime-Ane head have the "cutie" anime vibe, while for me, the Kanna is the most elegant, Mizuki slightly mean, and Misuzu slightly... innocent? ;) But that is my personal "classification" for these sculpts.

Actually, although I put this in the SD size topic it was mainly because that's where the greater number and variety of DD sculpts reside - I'd rather have an MSD (MDD) size because I want her to be a young girl to go with my SD dolls. However, I don't care for the standard "Rena" sculpt. Does anyone know what DD heads work well on the 40/48 Obitsu bodies?

Misty, the body part and skeleton replacement has definitely been a big concern of mine. The idea of an internal piece of my doll breaking freaks me out (I still don't string my resin dolls myself .... yes, I'm a wimp  ), but at least with an Obitsu you don't have to buy a whole "new body".

And I'm glad to know that Volks NS and Obitsu WS are a good match, too. I have to get rid of a couple of dolls/parts before I can afford the next step, but I do think the hybrid is the way I want to go.

This is true for the DD2, DDDy and MDD bodies. With the newer DD3, DDDy3, DDS, and MDD3s many of the external parts come with their corresponding internal parts. I never got around to getting one of the newer bodies so I can't tell you if the "3" parts are compatible with the "2" bodies/parts.

For the most part no, the parts aren't compatible, except for things like hands and busts. The skeleton was completely reworked for the III series, and has much better strength of pose. The MDD and the MDDIII are completely different inside and has much better posing overall now. The original one had it's own skeleton system different from DDII, was prone to very weak ankles and knees, and often is hard to get to stay standing unaided. The new skeleton is a scaled down version of the III series frame and the only standing problems you get is that they are very top heavy with their huge heads. :D

As for heads, you can use any you like at all. It doesn't have to come from Volks as an MDD.

Really? I had heard that several of the SD size heads were too big for the MDD (unless you are going for the chibi look).
