Being a doll maker it sometimes feel like I'm walking a tight rope over Uncanny Valley. Now that photo software and cameras are recognizing my sculpts as faces I feel I need to do or not do something when I paint to make sure they look doll like. If I reach a state of human looking sculpts I want them to be too perfect like Greek statues.

Don't feel too bad, Kim; some photo software recognizes Cherry's face as a human face, and she's nowhere near realistic except maybe for her eyes.

And to the oversized MH - I can't wait till they put out the supersized Draculaura. I am so snapping that up.

I celebrated when the software kicked in, it mean my little people were getting better.

I don't think I have ever had a true fear of dolls, although there was this one time in my childhood where I couldn't look this one porcelain doll in the eyes. It was to the point I couldn't come near it, and hid behind the Christmas tree just to avoid it. But other than that, I'm pretty fine with most dolls, well except porcelain dolls that are dirty or look weathered. You might enjoy an azone doll. They are small and quite cute, also being similar in style to a Smart Doll or Obitsu.

I've been thinking this over, and I've noticed that, for me, the degree to which I feel uncomfortable with a doll looking at me is affected by the style of the eyes. Painted on eyes bother me a lot less than inset eyes.

After thinking it over, I wonder if any of it is tied to viewing of films or hearing stories along the lines of that old Waxwork horror movie or probably a good half-dozen Twilight Zone/Tales From The Darkside/insert-creepy-story-series-here shorts. The ones where someone is murdered and the corpse is hidden by turning them into a waxwork or coating them with plaster and disguising them as a statue.

With inset eyes on a doll, especially decently realistic ones... the face is less realistic, and you can tell the eyes aren't the 'same piece' as the rest of the head, leaving me with the feeling I'm being stared at by a tiny corpse stuffed into a doll. The effect is less if the eyes are not as realistic (my Kid Sister doll from when I was little has kind of orangish eyes that are as far away from the Uncanny Valley as the rest of her).

And painted eyes are usually obviously painted no matter how well done, just because of lighting. And if they're extremely well done to the point where it's not obvious, usually so is the rest of the face, avoiding the 'mis-match' that seems to be the trigger for me.

But that's just me. I'm sure all our little triggers regarding whatever kind of dolls creep us out are all different (and I doubt most kids were allowed to be up in the middle of the night watching Twilight Zone from about age 3). But I do think that explains mine at least. And I think it's good to try to explain such things in your own head, because once you understand why something creeps you out it makes it less creepy.

If you aren't sure about the sizes of the bigger dolls you might want to go to a doll meet up and see some. The 1/6 Obitsu and customizable figures without strings compare to Barbie but there's nothing in stores to compare others too. Some 1/4 are about 18" tall but they aren't built like the American Girl type. Until my 70cm arrived I couldn't even picture a doll the size of a small child and I had a 60cm before.

Ah, I think a doll meetup sounds like a good idea! Kind of not sure where to find one though...

We have a section where you can see or ask if anyone here is local to you, other doll sites have them too.

The ones I went to were at public places generally away or protectable from kids, pets, and hazards. Dolls come out, pictures were taken, questions were asked, Xavier made me buy him a wife. Not long after a Mattel employee saw one of my Volks girls the 100 Poses Barbie came out...
