It makes me wonder how in the world Spinmaster made great jointed dolls with their Liv and Jakks Pacific with their Juku but Mattel keeps screwing it up. When the first gymnasts and ballerinas came out I was excited just to get one. The gymnast Stacy and friends are great. My favorite guy was skate date Ken until the 1999 body came out. When there was a huge sale on the 100 Poses I went crazy and rebodied most of my old TnTs because it was the best body I felt they'd ever make. Guys who can get the 1999.
On the other hand, both Liv and Juku Couture are discontinued, so you may be right about articulation not being profitable. But on the OTHER other hand, Monster High is selling well and they've got decent articulation, and the 18'' dolls have even better. Actually, wonder if their success affected the decision to develop this body?
Gymnast Stacie seems to have pretty good articulation, eapecially for a tiny doll.
I think I just tend to assume that at some point, doll production and quality will improve to the point that consumers will expect dolls to be fully articulated. But that's mostly based on my doll preferences without taking actual economical factors into account.

Looks like they can do Lotus position and the limbs come apart at the rotating thigh/upper arm joint.
