I adore Dear mine! I've been watching an Eddy peacock blue that's in stock on Denver Doll Emporium, but I can't bring myself to buy a full set when I know I'll just want to paint him as soon as he arrives. I thought the Dollmore Catish line was 1/6 for some reason, I remember wanting one at some point and only deciding against it because I couldn't afford it. If I somehow could get an extra paycheck before the 21st of the month, I'd order one of these Doll Chateau event girls:
Image

They're 32cm, so they'd be sort of 'super model' height compared to the rest of the group I'm semi-planning. They look to be just a bit thinner than the ImplDoll Dream's Art Belinda, who's also 32cm and was my second choice when I decided to order my Candace. Doll Chateau has some of the most elegant sculpts I've seen, they're so dainty. I would love to order a Doll Chateau Zora as well, but now I'm getting way ahead of myself.

I'm still searching and considering as I learn more about what's out there, but I'm honestly a little confused by the limited range of options for large-headed, non-childlike, high articulation or ball jointed dolls... I mean, the scale has been around forever in the fashion doll world, I think... (Bratz, Blythe before that, right?) I think the closest BJD's I've seen are the Xaga Doll girls who come on the 'cute' body, but that doesn't help me with my search for boys.

Oooh.... Doll Chateau I like the willowiness of their limbs and their rather interesting nightmarish/fantastical series, but I don't have characters who fit the look.

Oh yeah. Was doing my usual rummaging of Soom and came across this Lilaseries.

It seems like Obitsu bodies to me

Oversized heads go back to Betty Boop if not before, it's one of the hardwired things in our brain that says "cute" and "baby" and makes us want to care for it.

You can always make a Hybrid. My Blythe head was on a 27cm body instead of the usual slightly shorter one because that was what I had. They also work with larger Obitsu bodies. I think I saw a large Obitsu head adapted to a smaller body too. Once you find the head you like and see what kind of neck it has we can help you find a body.

I probably should have clarified when I said 'little art models' that I actually intend to draw them! I'm an art student taking a break from college, but I 'm really much too awkward to just ask my friends to hold still for half an hour in a weird pose so I can practice... My dolls never mind holding still for me. I was worrying that I would want to equalize that proportions of the dolls as I drew them, either resulting in a bunch of wasted time and erasing or simply pulling proportions out of my head. (Drawing from imagination doesn't help me learn!) You, though, you've managed to make art and hold the proportions beautifully, and seeing someone else make the difference look nice makes me a little more confident that I can do it, too.

Thanks! I made the cartoons in DAZ Studio using 3D CGI models based on my dolls. I managed to get a pretty good likeness of each of them; a surprising amount of people think the models are the actual dolls! :D I've also used dolls for traditional sketching--don't they make the most perfect subjects? They hold perfectly still (unless gravity ensues on a precarious pose), they don't tire, they never complain, they don't fidget, and they're always ready when you are. Win!

Iwa_Hoshi, thank you for reminding me of the Lila dolls! I saw them on DDE when I was deciding on my first resin doll, but passed over them at the time because I was looking for a strung BJD. I had completely forgotten about them! I kind of wish they were offered blank for a lower price, but the 'Lazy Butterfly' design is right down my alley... These reminded me of another thing, though, does anyone know if Pullip dolls can be bought blank? I think I like the Taeyang body more than the 27cm slim Obitsu male.

DollyKim, hybrids are becoming more and more appealing to me. I saw a Makie head on a 27cm Bobobie body while I was searching for size 6/7 heads, and I loved it! Too bad the Makies site is down, a Makie boy would be perfect if I got him off of the short little bodies they come with. In the meantime, I'm still stalking the Jake heads on the Hujoo site... still not in stock.

Embyquinn, I did think your comic was somehow an edited photograph until I spotted a little clipping on a boot! I adore 3D modeling, it's such an art. I would love to learn to 3D model backgrounds to use for drawing references. I can't do backgrounds worth a rat without a perfect photo reference, people are so much easier. I can produce some darn good art with a good reference for a person! I'm quite surprised that highly articulated dolls like Obitsu haven't replaced wooden pose mannequins in the art world.

Girls are so much easier to find than boys in the doll world, or at least that's how it's looking for me. I can list off plenty of complete girl dolls I want, but for boys I must be picky or something! XD Yet, as a whole, I kind of prefer boy dolls so that leaves me conflicted. I think I like the Planetdoll Mini Paul and Mini Dandy, but I think their heads might be a tad too small and I'm worried I'm going to end up wishing they were double jointed and being less than satisfied with their posing. Taeyang has nice designs, but the head is too big and I don't particularly like the face sculpt anyways.

I'm also having a hard time finding heads for sale separate from bodies. What I have found that I like has a price tag that makes my wallet crawl deep into my pocket! Maybe I'll save up and order a Doll Chateau Lance head, he's gorgeous but he's so expensive for a head in my opinion...

What kind of boys are you looking for because I've paid anywhere from $5 to $200+ for my guys with most being under $40 for nudes.

So when Makie Labs moved from the UK to the US, they got in an office clearing company, who has been putting the stuff up on eBay. I don't think I've seen any heads, but there's a few entire dolls still. From what I've heard the bidding has been getting stupid though (I've bought a couple of Makie accessories that he had on buy it now, but other people have mentioned the prices for the dolls on auction have gone rather high). http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/mr-integrale/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=

Edited to add: If you do get one, the head is designed to just pull off. I can't remember if the person who hybrided the Makie (if it's the same one I've seen - with the piebald markings?) posted how they modded it to fit the Bobobie.

DollyKim, the ideal body would pose as well as an Obitsu and have pretty sculpting and joints without being ripped with muscle like most adult male dolls. From your pictures I like the Volks Goh and maybe the dragon body for a stockier built character. There are a couple of resin 1/6 bodies I like from Xaga Doll, but I've never seen them offered without the heads, which are too small for the look I think I want...

Iwa_Hoshi, Thank you! Before I get too terribly excited, do you know if the Taeyang body poses fairly well? If it's at least noticeably better than the Monster High boys I have, I should be pretty satisfied. The idea of a Hujoo Jake on a Taeyang body sounds just about in the right scale for me.

ShortNCuddlyAm, you're definitely thinking of the same hybrid doll as I am! I've got the how-to bookmarked. Thanks for the link, I'll watch it while I watch the Hujoo site and we'll see which head becomes available first! I'm wishing the Makies site would reopen soon, but I don't even know how long it's been down. I would kill to have a source of customize-able heads that size.

Anyone know of good places to find heads? Particularly of the non-resin variety since I'm mostly looking at plastic bodies right now. (And resin heads are expensive!) Parabox heads seem to jump straight from 4.5in to 7in, and I'm really looking for something right in that skipped set of sizes.

Nope. Haven't tried a Teayang body. I haven't been actively body hunting after I completed my core 1/6 crew.
