Attempt at sewing for 18" dolls (lots of pictures)

Postby CrazyYoungCatLady » Sun Jul 10, 2016 5:17 pm

Every time I do a craft fair I'm constantly asked if I make clothes for American Girl. I got an Our Generation doll at Target and gave it a try.

Here's my pirate/fantasy outfit. I goofed and the seam for the skirt ended up in the front, but I still like how it turned out.

Here's a retro one.

I'd appreciate feedback because I haven't done anything as involved as the pirate dress. Thanks for looking!

I think they turned out really lovely. If you hadn't said so I would never have known this was your first shot at this size :)

People ask me if I sew human clothes - and I always answer "hell no, dolls don't complain if the crotch rides or the armpits are too tight" LOL.

They look great to me! It's good to do things that are different from what can be purchased. Be sure you check out local prices so you can price them well.
Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

It's not a mistake, it's a feature. And they look great!

I haven't done craft fairs in years, but those clothes not only look great, but they are not at all similar to what I remember seeing for these dolls from other crafters when I did go to fairs. I love the retro sundress, and ren faire garb is so fun! You can add things like fairy wings, or ribbon hair wreaths, or belt pouches as accessories.

Great job!

Thanks everyone! I've also tried a kind of steam punk outfit with bloomers and a "leather" jacket. I'm having a lot of fun making clothes for this size! It's a little more time consuming than the Monster High clothes I usually make but I'm pushing my skill level and everything is turning out so good.

I wish my "attempts" at sewing looked even half as good as yours! Great job!
