She originally was Barbie in Japan, back in the 1980s. Takara was licensed by Mattel to make a Japanese version of Barbie because the original was not a good seller at first. They made Barbie younger and more manga/anime-looking to appeal to the Japanese public. However, a few years later, the original Barbie took off in Japan and Mattel ended its contract with Takara. Since the "new" Barbie was so popular, Takara continued to produce the doll, but renamed her Jenny. Their explanation for the name change? Jenny was "pretending" to be Barbie because she was too shy to use her real name in public until she was sure people liked her!
...That's the way I heard the story, anyway. :B
