I think Silkstone is Mattel for "let's add $50 to the price of a doll because we can" I do believe they're a bit taller than other lines and hopefully of higher end plastic.
I really like the Russia dolls. I love the old school eyes on the girls. The Da Vinci one is just awesome. I love her face! The gender bender Frank Sinatra and Elvis make me cry.
P.S. "I can be an architect" Barbie. Yeah you see so many pink building these days. They're just all over the place.
I just got my Barbie Collector Spring 2011 catalog in the mail. The Russia dolls are already in it. Yay! Darya Barbie: $150, Verushka Barbie: $115, Nicolai Ken: $75, and Mila Barbie: $85. I just love the name Nicolai :3
Looking at Russian Ken one might better spend their time constructing their own Cossack/national costume of the Republic of Georgia costume themselves. The texture of the fabric turns me off but them gain I'm spoiled by the stuff Dragon uses. The overpriced collector Barbies are meant to stay in their boxes and not be used any way. And chances are he's going to be on the Deadwood body and not too many of the others can fit the clothes.
Silkstones are the Barbies that Mattel markets to the people who had vintage Barbies before, now want to play dress-up again and have a lot of disposable income. They come in fancy ribbon-tied boxes, use vintage molds (not sure about that Ken though?) and are made of an ungodly hard vinyl that Mattel calls silkstone. Of course, I am cheap and don't consider stiffness a selling point so this is secondhand knowledge.
I love the facepaint on that first silkstone girl with the headscarf. Gonna try and copy it on my thrift store repro doll.
I'm disappointed with those articulated Basics. I was really hoping for at least one guy, and a body in a darker skintone. Hopefully there'll be more.
