First 'commissioned' Faceup- Customhouse Tiny

Postby SillyLilPuppet » Mon May 23, 2011 12:53 am

So this is the first faceup I've done on someone else's doll. A few weeks back I had traded my Obitsu girl for a Customhouse Ai girl (Loved the obitsu but such a pain to sew for) and done the faceup myself. This has apparently made my gram realize, "Now I don't have to pay for faceups ever again!!" and she promptly bought herself a Customhouse tiny xD The tiny went home with me the night she got it and was sanded, had some slight mods to even out the eyes a bit (pet peeve of mine) and got a faceup, plus some cute Barbie items and a spare wig.

So what do you guys think? I've promised a friend some faceups on her dolls for practice/portfolio fodder/advertisement but am I ready to open up a comission shop on one of the big sites?

Aw! She looks great! If you are looking to do commissions you should get something like a portfolio together with photos examples, do/don'ts, etc.
I'm mostly on Tumblr now.

The fine details are a little hard to see but it looks good overall. Clean and good use of color.

Cute! She is a bisou no? Which sculpt is she? I have two little Bisous as well.

I love CH dolls. If you are interested in doing commissions, I would suggest looking at portfolios of existing face up artists to compare your work to theirs. I'm trying to start up too but I've only completed one so far. I'm waiting for several heads to be sent in but yeah, seems to be hard to get ppl interested. Mostly I want to try out painting different types of heads since I can't afford to buy all different kinds.

Personally (sorry if i am harsh. I went to art school and was never known to hold back at critiques.) I think you need a little more practice before you can start doing much on the larger boards. It really depends on the price you are charging as well. So far I would say you need to neaten the eyebrows and have neater thinner eye crease lines. The pink in the lips also look like it is bleeding too much into the skin around it?

Another thing to take note of is that this girl is tiiiiny since she is a bisou. I have seen your larger dolls and the work on them is stronger and very good indeed.

Like Sorean, I cant see the eyelash detail so I can't give much comment on that. If you can, take photos of heads where you can see the faceup more clearly. Most faceup artists do closeup shots to show their work.

Thanks for the feedback guys :3 And yes, she is a Bisou, I *think* its a Lily but not sure, my grandmother has the paperwork for her. Its a little easier to see the detail over here http://sillylilpuppet.deviantart.com/ar ... -209624864 cuz Photobucket shrunk the pics a bit. She is a tiny tiny lil thing and I've never tried this much detail on something this size, so technique definitely does still need some practice. Hopefully my friend will have the heads she wants me to do next time we hang out (or maybe can talk my gram into redoing some of hers that are worn)

My grandmother is the reason I'm into dolls xD She has more BJDs than me, over a hundred vintage and antique dolls, and even has a few original Blythes tucked away somewhere.
...she also does costuming and watches more anime than I do

lol, That's so cute. I wish my parents would watch anime. Being immigrants my family doesn't really have a collection of anything other than interesting stories. Intangible but precious.
