Ivan needs a war horse...

In my previous post I mentioned DoA, and they talked about My Twinn horses fitting SD pretty well. Two pics..they have more throughout that thread, but since I know a lot of people aren't on DOA.

ok ... I see what you are referring to

with an SD sized doll the My Twinn horses are like what used to be called a "riding palfry" ... considered a good size horse for most women who rode

Trethowan's Ivan ... at 72cm would tower over that size horse ... as would my Mio

if the Fresian by Resins by Randy isnt big enough to look right with her Ivan ... Trethowan might want to consider one of the "draft" horse models they also make
... breeds that are now considered purely "draft" horses ... back in the medieval period were war horses ... Shire's and Percheron's ... both because of their size, they could easily carry an armored Knight, and horse armor as well and not be overly weighed down ... and both breeds also had a very stable temperment, which was critical for a horse that went into battle ... a skittish horse could get it's rider embarrassed, or killed very quickly

if I were to get a horse for Mio ... I would want it to be either a Trakehner or a Hanoverian

if she is in her heels ... my Mio is just over 68cm ... even barefoot she is 65cm



it almost seems like there needs to be a separate section for the BIG 1/3 scale dolls .... not many of us have them it seems ... both because of cost ... and the size/weight

but those of us who do have them ... love them


either that or some sort of special symbol ... or special color (maybe teal) to use for their names ... that lets other doll owners know that our dolls are larger than the rest of the 1/3 scale dolls

A decent base horse, My Twin or Madame Alexander even, can always be built up. It wouldn't be much to add some air dry clay or Apoxie Sculpt muscles.

I have a pair of 70cm twins so I can look around for something they could fit on in my travels.

Aaahhh... also such beautiful horses. /dreamy sigh. I'm usually a sucker for anything with fuzzy feet. Drafts and draft-mixes were always my favs. When I was a kid I had this lovely little paint/appaloosa mix and in the winter his feet got fuzzy, and he had curly hair on his forehead like a cow. I used to giggle over his fuzzy fetlocks. My dad always rode a big black TN walker, it was 16 hands and ridiculously huge. I got to go to Breyerfest in Kentucky the year they had the Friesian stallions on display. I watched them for a long while, took a million pictures, probably sounded like an idiot squealing and carrying on the way I did.

I am so grateful for the links. I'm exploring them all, and a few other options. It might be one of those projects that takes some time, but eventually it will happen.

Ivan is so giant. I carried him to a Con. Once. My arm was sore the next day. (embarrassed) He was supposed to be my tallest character at 6'1" tall, so it worked that he was 72cm and everyone else was in the 60+ range. BUT then I decided I had a character that was a 6'3" quarterback football type. /sigh. Curse me and my preference for American comics. Looks like it's Iplehouse time for me. I'm still looking for someone bigger than the Dragondoll Uncle under $300 bucks. Aaaahh... good times. Fun research though!!

Speaking of, and back to horses, I found a 27cm obitsu that would be a great mini-Ivan. I'm tellin' ya, Mini-Ivan plus Breyer? Problem solved.

hehehe ... at least you have a Con close enough to you that you can go to .... there is NOTHING near me ... I was thinking about trying to go to the doll show in Utah in Oct, that is the closest one ... but it looks like spring will be the chance if then

as for dolls bigger that your Ivan .... Iplehouse doesnt make any ... their tallest is 70.5cm .... the only other ones I know are bigger is the Lusion series ny Dollmore @ 80cm but they are only childlike looking girl dolls
... I seem to remember seeing one of the male Korean dolls that was 75cm, but I'm not positive of that ... let me do some digging

... I'm sorry but the instant I saw the face on that one all I could think of was Donkey from the Shrek movies ... make the legs a little shorter and it would be a dead ringer, especially the face

I thought I remembered seeing a doll taller than your Ivan ... I found him ... 75cm

since he really belongs over in the 1/3 section ... I'll make a post about him over there

Double checking my medieval research on warhorses nets that the warhorse averaged about 6 feet at the withers (I am using feet rather than "hands" since most folks are not horsey around here). So that puts a 1/3 warhorse right at 23 1/2 inches at the withers. I am pretty sure that all those riding-toy horses I posted are measuring at the head rather than at the withers.
