My experimental Monster High Customs. (Cleo/Clawdette/Minty)

Postby Kd_Bunchanumbers » Mon Aug 01, 2011 5:36 am

Lol, Photobucket has become increasingly difficult to work with so my pictures keep getting clogged up...

So yeah, I decided to finally get around to painting my Gloom Beach Cleo and wiping/repainting my School's Out Clawdeen since I've seen both Andrea's and Giulia's recent Frankie Customs.

These face ups are both very experimental and took much longer to complete either one than I figured (face ups only take about an hour at the most nowadays, these gals took 5 hours altogether).

Clawdeen was inspired by another's Flickr member's Lulemee's repaints based on the fantasia centaurettes. It was definitely out of my comfort zone since those faces use a lot more eye white than I'm comfortable with. Check them out here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/lulemee/57 ... hotostream

Her hair was taken down, boiled straight and styled like so. I'm utterly tempted to make a Monster High Centaur body for her now...

Cleo has had her fringe trimmed off (one of the things I hate about Cleo is her fringe. Why couldn't Mattel bother rooting in a fringe rather than pulling one from her part? ESPECIALLY for an upwards do?).

Yeah, the staining just was beyond what I would usually do with a face up so I decided that screw it, I wanted to do a doll version of my mask and this was an ample opportunity to do so. So I marked in the squares with a watercolour and painted them in. The other parts of the face I just winged it and went "WHAT WOULD GIULIA DO IF SHE WAS SLEEP DEPRIVED AND WAS ACTUALLY ME IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE?"

Lols these dolls are definitely outside of my skill set but I like to think of them as an okay effort for being practice dolls.

It's really, really weird holding these two dolls together since they don't even feel like the same doll base.

Though honestly I like both equally, it's hard picking a favourite.

Image
Image
So yeah, a side view of her face up, cuz it warranted one.

The hair curls were a last minute addition since I felt her forehead was so gapping huge and needed to be filled. Everyone knows when in doubt, just paint curls.

Also Cleo needs a better outfit.

So... yeah. I still find it difficult to get as inspired with Cleo as I do with any of the other Monster High girls (except possibly she-Deuce, I mean, 'Spectra').

However, I do find I'm warming up to her despite not being such an interesting base doll. But then I'm terribly biased cuz she's the average Barbie skintone with normal features and no real special bits...

Though I find she looks better after a repaint...

Image
Well, poor SO Frankie has been neglected so badly since her hair is ultra thick and her clothes stolen by the other Frankie.

I actually debated ripping out all her hair and repainting her but since I'm lazy I figured a simple removing of the black hair and rerooting with a less annoying colour would work.

Lols surprisingly, her hair is unglued so I could simply yank them out without a scalpel. I still used a needle to pick out the black from the white.

So yeah, there goes my crazy idea of dyeing doll hair using Copic Markers and solvent. I first tried dyeing her hair using peach coloured Copic marker but it went on too dark and made her hair stiff so I removed it using my brush cleaner and off it went, but it left a very faint pink tinge...

So after her hair dried I attacked it again using hot pink but... yeah. After leaving it in her hair for an hour I wiped it off and... it barely made a difference. It was the lightest of pinks but I was too lazy so I figured good enough until I decide to attack her hair with acrylic paint...

I'm a fan of two pony related things. The new series and for a longer time, the webcomic "Kimono's Townhouse" starring two ponies. One is Kimono, the more level headed one with Minty, the more bubbly headed geeky one.

Having a doll with mint green skin and light pink hair... yeah, I decided to turn this into a Minty inspired doll.

However, I based her face up from a few fanart related sources, though the blushing was inspired by this one:
http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lnowq ... o1_400.jpg

Her eyes are shaped like G3 ponies but I decided that if I decided to make more Pony elated dolls they'll be the new series so she has G4 inspired eyes.

I decided to dress her how I figure the Minty from Kimono's Townhouse would dress. Slightly professional and preppy due to working at tech support yet oddly mismatched just because she's slightly scatterbrained and is kind of a geek.

Check out the webcomic here:

So.... yeah. I was kinda sick of her not having pink enough hair so I dug out my ultra staining, weirdo Magenta acrylic paint I try to never get on anything cuz it stains like crazy, diluted it to coloured water and soaked her hair with it.

Surprisingly, the colour took it was a tad too bright so it was a weird trial and error of washing out the hair and combing in more paint liquid.

In the end, the colour was EXACTLY the colour I needed so it all worked out. Lols, thoughts?

BATMINT!

Image
Turns out, finding a decent G3 Minty is difficult, so here's Minty holding a soft keychain of Minty.

Image
Yeah... I think Francesca is feeling a bit... uncustomized compared to her crazy cousins.
Lols so Frankie Chan, Mintie Stein and Francesca pose together. I'm debating redoing Frankie's eyes since they're way too starey and make her look a bit spaced out...

Also, look how Pink Mintie's hair is now >:D

Image
I really, really want that Vintage mold Wicked witch Mattel put out in that gorgeous Mint green colour but I can't justify a stiff bodied doll for that cost, lol.

If I can make a mint green guy with orange hair I'll be happy as a clam.

Image
Yeah, I'm kinda monstered out now. I'm not even sure I want any of the new dolls...

I Love what you did to Clawdeen! She turned out lovely. The eyes are perfect~ the fantasia centaurs are my next inspiration as well. Once I've done with my fairy round of Monsters anyhow. I've never really messed with reroots or applying hair but I'm going to have to soon to attach the mohair I've got on the way to Mr. Faun somehow. I can't wait to try something like this cutie however
Image I just loved that tail.

Your Minty turned out amazing too! Just the right colors. Are you going to centaur-ize her leave her as is or just give her hooves?

All I can say for a moment as I keep looking at the pictures is WOW.

I love all your girls. You did a great job on the repaints and customizing of them. They look like totally different dolls. *wipes the drool off her chin*

Your Minty is fabulous! I love her, she's pretty awesome.

You new Clawdeen is amazing too, she reminds me of Jackie from That 70's show! xD I think her actor name is like.. Mila Kunis? Maybe?

Very nice!

ThisStrangeForest, thanks! I'm really tempted to buy one of those dorky looking Disney Mattel horses and put Clawdeen on that body since both are very Disney proportioned, but... the lack of joints xD I love that tail though :D

Minty is going to be plain old humanoid since I feel it'll be too busy otherwise...

Lexagon, thanks! I'm tempted to try pinkifying other blonde dolls now to switch it up a bit... Bwahahaha! Monster High dolls are such fabulous base dolls to work with though 8D

Skookum, thanks! I love more simplistic faces than ultra busy faces so it makes me happy you like it as well.

Moonwillow, thank you so very much! There's been some really amazing Monster High customs out there so I feel a tad intimidated showing mine, but I'm glad they're so well liked :)

Evelien, well these dolls definitely helped me expand my comfort zone a bit more since they're so different to my usual fare, haha. Thank you :)

Gift In Edge, I used a water colour pencil to mark in the squares and I used a flat brush to paint in the squares. There was several derps but it looks nice I hope.

Kitty, thank you! I'm so happy Minty turned out so well and glad you think so too :D

Lols to be honest, the only thing I think of in regards to Mila Kunis is that she's Meg from Family Guy xD I can totally see the resemblance lol.

Like you already mentioned that you like 'simplistic faces'. I do too. I prefer them to look more natural in meaning they are not wearing so much make-up. Sometimes I don't mind it if it is subtle...to me less is more. So your dolls really appeal to me.
