You're probably thinking of a Faraday cage, which can be made using mesh or foil and works against electromagnetic radiation. Mesh is frequently used in Faraday cages due to its relative transparency and durability. However, most alien mind control beams are not electromagnetic in nature and can easily penetrate open meshes. Some of the silk like weaves made of stainless steel will work to some degree and this material is proven more durable than foils. If employing aluminum foil it works best dull side out. The dull side scatters the beams producing less return for the aliens to detect.
