Alternative dye options

Postby kurosu.chan » Sat Aug 06, 2011 5:39 pm

Knowing that dolls can be dyed with dye meant for dying, and knowing that other things have been dyed with things not meant for dying, I was wondering; can a doll be dyed with things besides dye?

Resin can be stained, so would it be possible to dye a resin doll with somehting like coffee or tea? The same way one could tea-stain a wig or fabric? Just curious...but it sounds like it would work.

PRobably. Resin is rather toothy and does absorb liquid to a certain extent. I say try it out on small resin pieces you don't want.

Your idea should work. Resin is kind of like a sponge. I agree with landwhale, test on some extra resin parts you have. Good luck!:D

Some people on DoA have tried it, and the results are pleasant but temporary.

If you dye a bare, stripped, no MSC doll, the stain rests on the surface, can be MSC'd in place like blushing, but doesn't really penetrate the resin much, no more than normal yellowing does, and with a similar effect.

If you dye an MSC'd doll, the stain penetrates the MSC and stains it, with darker results, but doesn't touch the resin. In this way it is somewhat like airbrushing.

Thats perfect, thank you all!
VV: the tip about the MSC is especially helpful. (I would have stripped it anyway, but I thought it would repel the dye...good to know!)

Sounds like a good method to try if you are curious about dying but don't want the long term effect. I'll have to keep this in mind.

Or...if you spend all your money on a doll and then can't buy dye...>.<
