When to buy?

Postby Jobee » Wed Aug 10, 2011 5:09 pm

How do you decide when you want to buy a doll? Is it based on how long you want it? Price? how it compares to your other dollies? Do you feel okay spending lots of money on one?

I personally have a very difficult time letting myself buy anything that's not food or other necessities, so I only have a handful of little obitsus. I'd really like to have more but it's hard to feel okay with it. :?

I look at the doll for a long time and debate how much I want it. Then I look at the price, and then back at the doll. If the price is reasonable, I have an easy time convincing my husband how badly I need the doll in my life, if it's too high... I am s**t out of luck. lol It's worse when I come across a beautiful doll that I really want but it's too expensive.

While I like the bigger dolls. The 1/6 is the right size for me (easier for me to store). I also plan on making a photostory and I can afford them.

I tease that the doll hobby is like crack but for me it kind of is. I'm an obsessive type of person I suppose. If it If I don't get something new in the way of my doll obsession every now and again I pretty much go stir crazy. I'll Pace my house, end up repainting and decorating every room in it , I have doll dreams, I develop ticks. Kind of like a person trying to stop smoking. My husband always jokes that he can't live without me but if he could he would be rich. So I guess I buy whenever the urge strikes which is pretty much all the time~ although i am trying to wind my way down to the cheaper dolliehcrack.

Well. For 1/6ers it seems that the moment I spot the right doll or the right sculpt that within my means I would get it.

There was a 1/6 official media doll of my favorite character that I wanted very badly but couldn't find a way to get her (didn't have a credit card then). And I ended up settling for a customized doll of said character and ended up adoring this doll to bits (see my avatar). Funny thing was that 5 years later official media doll appeared on ebay and a cheaper rate and me with paypal opted not to get this doll since customed doll did a good enough job as it it(They both use Obitsu bodies)

And as for larger dolls. I been looking at various sculpt for over 4 years before settling for a Parabox Megu on a 50cm Obitsu. I could had gotten an AOD Lan or Tender Yan but I have no idea why I keep resisting until the Parabox came along

I started out with the 1/6 scale obitsu and I never planned to go bigger than that. then I made the mistake of looking at the resin dolls on Junkyspot *groan*. I think I spent about three months looking at one particular doll, telling myself NO, looking at the doll, telling myself NO, etc... until finally one day I caved in and just bought it. Haven't looked back since LOL.

And it's funny because there are things I look at today like Ipods and stuff and I go "damn that's expensive" yet I have dolls that cost just as much and I didn't blink (too much) before I made those purchases. I guess it comes down to perspective eventually and just how much you want the doll and it's calling to you. Although I've bought a lot of new dolls this year, I normally try not to get a lot at a time...but it was a bad year for me emotionally and dolls are something of a therapy if you will.

When the time is right for you - you'll hit that purchase button without hesitation. And the good thing about these dolls is that if you decide later that it really wasn't right for you it doesn't usually take long to find someone else for whom the doll IS right and who will buy it from you :)

I only have 1 expensive doll and 2 fashion dolls who was thrown in my shopping cart at WalMart with out hesitation (because they were affordable XD), but for dolls on my wishlist, I always make sure I look at the price. I usually go less than $150 for a YoSD or a tiny, less than $250 for a MSD, and less than, say, $350 for a SD. Because I have to save up for all the dolls and doll related things I buy. When a doll goes over the $400 mark, it's listed as my dream doll...>.>

But if a doll is at an affordable price and a face that I fell in love with, plus I have enough money, I'd probably buy it at the speed of lightning.

Thank you so much for replying to this. I feel a bit better about my hesitation, and some good points are made. Perhaps a set budget for each size will help. :) And maybe someday, I will just feel comfortable buying that special one.

It's also a lot easier to ease yourself into making a big purchase by asking questions of yourself.

Do you have a character for he/she yet? and my favorite one is "Is there a layaway policy!" Haha!

I think a good way to save up for a dream doll is that for every doll related purchase you make, you save up, say 10 percent more, and that 10 percent goes to the dream doll piggy bank...or something.
