Vinyl vs resin- the ultimate battle!

Postby quidam » Wed Aug 17, 2011 6:06 am

Okay...maybe not so dramatic!
There are many threads where people mention they prefer one to the other, so what do you prefer and why? Perhaps you like them both, but for different reasons?
I'm loose, so it doesn't have to be vinyl or resin, it could be another material. You also don't have to say you so much like the material, but however the doll is made to other systems. Let's hear it all!

I'll say it: I love resin. Annica was my first, and when I opened her box I fell in love on sight. I love how smooth and heavy it is. I also love elastic stringing and the satisfaction of getting the jointing in just the right position.

But I'll also freely admit that I don't know much about vinyl past the Barbies of my youth, and I know that she may not be the best example of prime vinyl. One thing I do recall liking about it was it is chewy. I was a strange kid, and loved to chew on Barbie feet. Perhaps Obitsus do not have this wonderful feature. Someone test one of theirs and report back to me on this important feature.

Don't have much experience with resin. but spent the better part of 3 years or so drooling over various sculpts (AOD Lan and DOD E-an) and searching for the right doll. First time I ever held a resin was a Dragondoll Cheng and he's heavy.

I suppose in my case was that I know more vinyl people(Dollfie Dream people who in turn are 1/6 neemos and some Obitsu/Volks) than resin people that push me into my Obitsu Parabox Megu(lol yes irony an Obitsu. Megu was a right sculpt too). Oh and Obitsu was chosen on account of how I keep seeing folks pose their dolls (Resu's Yuubris, John's Freya. Kiki's Omi). 1/3 Obitsu was pretty much the big Obitsu of my 1/6ers

I won't rule out resin when the right one comes along as long as it fits in with my existing dolls and the character is willing to move into the sculpt.

Vinyl/Resin, Ford/Chevy, Coke/Pepsi, Taste Great/Less Filling...

It's really a matter of personal preference. Each has their pros and cons. Just don't dismiss the other choice out of hand just because it's different. Try it, you may like it.

I have both - and plenty of both. Vinyl has AWESOME poseability (well, Obitsu do, I don't have a DD to compare) - the drawback, however, is lack of variety in head sculpts for females and just plain lack of truly decent males. The upcoming 65cm male obitsu is cool looking and may change that - but still, that's one sculpt vs how many resin ones?

On the other hand, you can put resin heads on vinyl, so that's not a massive issue.

Love my resin dolls too though! The variety, the colors, the infinite possibilities can't be beat :)

I've got both resin and vinyl, and I like them equally. I am sooo excited for that 65cm Obitsu boy, even though I don't have a character planned for him (...yet) I would have more vinyl in my collection if there was more variety. Still, planning at least two more vinyl dolls in addition to the 1.5 I already have (doll + floating head), so...

The only downside to vinyl to me is the staining factor, but I've only had that issue with colors that are known to bleed+elastic holding the fabric tight to the body. A simple shirt/boxers/leggings underneath solves that. I was really pleased with how Obitsu vinyl feels, I'd heard lots of "omg, it's so plasticy!" But so is resin, so hah. I like how light my Obitsu are, no arm cramps at cons!

And I love resin because, well, it's a fabulous material and there are so many different options available. I love the amount of detail that it can hold, and there is just a quality to it that I can't describe, but I love. Of course, that could be all the resin fumes I've inhaled talking.

Phew :/ I'd say vinyl ,but just because I have a better time working with them.. I love resin dolls, I admire people who are able to keep a larger collection of them, but I had so much trouble with them xD I was upper cautious, and afraid to take them anywhere, breakage, yellowing, thus I had trouble bonding with any resin I ever owned..
I'm still trying to get over this. :/ For now I'll stick to my vinyl

Hmm...I like resin because of the solidness, but vinyl is fun and squishy! *pokes an Obitsu* Plus they're light. I would also like moar ABS dolliehs, considering that they're less expensive, durable and such.

The downside to vinyl would be staining...and like Greyhaunt said, lack of sculpts but hey, resin head on vinyl body works, plus a face up can make a sculpt look very different. And they're kinda picky about what sealants they can take, most likely that's not something we can pick up at a random store.
The downside of resin would be the yellowing and the weight (we need to do a competition to see who can lug a 70cm resin around a convention all day. The winner probably won't be me). And if I want to sand the doll and stuff, the dust is toxic so bye bye extra money that goes to a respirator.
The downside to ABS is that there's not that many companies doing it (Hujoo is the only one I can think up from top of my head) so there's lack of many sculpts.
The ever growing wishlist: Hujoo Dana, Obitsu 40, and an army of other Obitsus with anime style heads.
The more expensive end of my wishtlist: Limhwa Half Elf and Elfdoll Soah, my dream dolls.

mmmm... I have to go with resin, just because 99% of my crew IS resin. lol I do want more vinyl, though. And maybe some more ABS. I love my little Hujoos!

I'd say I have a love-hate with vinyl. I love how well the bodies pose (and stay posed) and how LIGHT they are compared to large resin. I prefer the 60cm-ranged bodies over the 27cm, though. I have a few 27cms but they mostly get ignored in favor of my bigger dolls. Even my 27cm resins don't get as much attention.

What I hate about vinyl is how easily it stains, and how impossible it is to get out. Which means dark clothes are out unless I've got a body stocking protecting the vinyl. I just got a Dollfie Dream dynamite girl. She won't be wearing anything but light-haired wigs and pale clothes. I don't want her to end up like my first Obitsu body did, covered in dark stains from stockings and skirt waistbands. ^^;

ah yea, I keep forgetting about that vinyl staining issue - which is dumb considering how many of my girls are already suffering from it :( I need to invest in some body stockings!
