oh the Jem dilemma ...

Well, my husband calls me up last night and tells me that there is a guy at his work whose daughter recently got into watching Jem and the Holograms because of The Hub.
I have a Jem Aja. Husband tells this guy that. This guy now wants to buy my Aja for his daughter because the ones on ebay go for apparently outrageous prices.
I told husband that if he doesn't want to pay ebay prices for it, then tell me what he would like to pay. It turns into some kind of cycle crap that is annoying...I even told the dude to name a good price and I'll throw in a Barbie Rocker and a 80's outfit... no dice. :/

BUT my real issue is this, should I sell it to a kid (for less), even though this is a doll that is getting close to 30years old. Even if it is a toy, and children play with toys. Or should I keep her, and sell her on ebay for more or to a collector who is going to take care of it, and not just throw it around and stash it in a barbie bus or something.

It sounds like you've already made your decision. At least that's what I get reading your post. It sounds like you don't want to sell that doll to a little kid, or deal with the stress that the back and forthing seems to come to. I don't blame you. I don't think I could sell something that I care about to a kid. I usually sell my stuff to other collector's, unless I really don't have a connection to it than whoever pays gets it. I know that sounds harsh but you have to do what feels best.

ebay her. This guy obviously doesn't care enough to get the doll for hte price it's worth. The kid isn't going to care about the doll the way collector would. If you've kept the doll in good condition for such a long time it would be a shame to sell it to a kid who would probably get tired of it and leave it by the wayside.

Hasbro needs to get off their behinds and make a new Jem line. For now why don't you recommend one of those Twist and Dance Livs since they are very Jem-like.

I say keep her and sorry to say but to tell your husband not to do that again. If this guy is trying to screw you out of it just make an excuse like: "Oh she means a lot to me...My grandmother gave her to me when I was very young." No one questions the sentimental value if you put it that way and then suggest Liv dolls and some wigs for it.

Agreed with the posts above me seems you've made up your mind it also seems that as great as it is seeing reruns of old shows like batman beyond when kids see it they think they are watching something recent when it's not I agree that if the father isn't willing to pay $200.00 for the doll on ebay (or even look around for a better price I just found some nude on ebay for $17.00 or so) then maybe he should rethink getting one for his kid

or the other option would be buying a barbie and customizing her to look like jem or one of the others for the kid thats cheaper if he is looking for cheap

Aja has no sentimental value to me, I found her about a year (maybe?) ago at a thrift store, at the time I didn't know it was a Jem doll, I thought she was one of those blue haired fairies that mattel made a while back. (The thrift store I bought her at sells all their smaller items in large grab bags.. which stinks sometimes because I can't tell what is inside or what condition it's in) I was so surprised when I got home and saw who/what she was. She is more or less a cool factor for me. I collect things that are unique, and well... jem and her buddies hit it. xD

I think that I could eh...MAYBE part with her, if the right offer was made.. BUT I do believe I would rather sell to a collector than to a child. If I were going to sell her.

It's not my husbands fault. xD; He honestly had no idea. haha I've been buying and selling things from thrift stores for a while now. I bet he does feel bad now though. xD

I wouldn't hand one of them over to a kid for playing simply because of what they're made of and their age. Go with Ebay, go with the money.

Until Hasbro does something rerooting some Barbies or putting together some Livs with the right wigs would be a more friendly kid option. Biggest thing with that Liv and Barbie clothes are easy to find and there's nothing out there for the Jem/Darci crowd unless again you want to pay collector prices or hit upon some patterns.

On the Liv end I was able to get enough dolls and wigs to work out, they make pink, blue, purple, and pink-blonde as loose wigs. The recent dance set of dolls, on sale at some Targets, have great 8s hair.

The Twist and Dance Sophie even has a wig that can switch from blond to pink. I think the little girl would love to have a Jem that actually transforms.
