There's a "teachable moment" that got wasted by the parent. I think a 3 year old is old enough to be taught that you don't violate a person's space (purse) and take their property.

lol Closest I ever had that happen was on Gaia in one of the BJD threads. Someone was looking to get into the hobby, and asked if someone would send her a doll. We pointed out some of the less-expensive stores that sell them. She's like, "Well, I can't really afford a doll right now. Can't someone just give one to me for free? I can pay for shipping!"

It's like, yeah, someone is going to send a several-hundred-dollar doll to a complete stranger, free of charge. Like THAT'S gonna happen.

We told her that if she can't afford a doll and isn't willing to take the time and save up to buy one on her own with her allowance or birthday/Christmas money, then she ought to consider a less expensive hobby until she's old enough to start earning a steady paycheck. I don't actually know how old she is, but I highly doubt she was old enough to work.

What you do with those people is piece together broken and stained Obitsu parts and send her a Pppowerbook Dolfie.

How bout sticking a buff action figure head on a bitty Bitsu (complete with a cute dress and hair bow)? That would be a...learning experience XD But it may scar them for life...
The ever growing wishlist: Hujoo Dana, Obitsu 40, and an army of other Obitsus with anime style heads.
The more expensive end of my wishtlist: Limhwa Half Elf and Elfdoll Soah, my dream dolls.

My magazine gets tables at anime conventions sometimes, and we like to have our dolls sit on the table so that they can hang out with each other and draw in the curious. "Oh, she's so cute!" or "Wow, that's kind of freaky..." can be a very good segue into a lot of anime-related talk, after all. Of course, the double edged sword is that some people will come over to our table not for the magazine but to ask to buy the dolls themselves ("Are you selling those?") The price is usually an instant turn-off: And none of us actually have "expensive" dolls.

At Home: Little Ari (Resinsoul Mei), Gilan (Resinsoul Song), Mina (Jun Planning Ai Cosmos), Yukiko (5StarDoll Tong Tong), Julia (Hujoo Yumi), Lion'a (Hujoo Suve), Ella (Jun Planning Hestia Isora), Mint (Fairland Pukifee PongPong, "unnamed thus far" (Hujoo Nano Freya)
Wish List: Delf Ani, Resinsoul Yun/5StarDoll Angelo (f.), Island Doll Emily, BJD Hamster pet

People can be funny sometimes. If they're not in the culture they don't understand that it isn't just a glorified Barbie doll.

I've had someone express a desire to buy Klar from me once, so I quoted a the price at a few thousands because, while I don't mind selling him off, it was a huge pain to piece him together, so it'd be just as time consuming to find all the parts and put a second version of him together again. After all, I spent an entire year trying to track down JUST the body I wanted (the company that makes it won't sell the body separately). Personally, I have no problems with anyone trying to duplicate Klar (or any of my characters, for that matter) on their own. As long as they're not literally stealing them from me, I'm totally cool with that. XD

I also had an elderly woman offer to buy my Ciel when I was at a doll meet, but his body was limited edition (with only one on the secondary market, which the seller refuses to split), so I declined to sell him.

I never had any younger cousins attempt to touch or grab my dolls because I'm very open about how much they cost and I tend to keep them locked in my room whenever guests are over. One of my uncles asked to hold Yuubris once, and he remarked, "I'm giving her back to you because it feels like I'm holding $200."

Did you tell him $200 was a little low?

I think I told the story before, of the few times I took my dolls to sewing club sessions. It was earlier this year, around February I think. One attendee's kids kept reaching their grubby little fingers to touch the doll's faces. I didn't bring my dolls after that, which defeated the purpose of the sewing group. I hate it when parents think everyone else is ok with their kids running amuck. Drives me crazy.
