1961 Ken Reproduction

Postby magkelly » Fri Nov 18, 2011 9:54 pm

A friend of mine gave me the 1961 Ken repro as an early Christmas present today. We're probably not going to see each other again till after the holiday but usually we don't exchange much other than cards and cookies so I was pretty speechless. I didn't expect it at all! A vintage flocked Ken doll has long been a "want" of mine and while I still mean to get me the real deal one of these days this repro is just lovely. He comes with red swim trunks and a towel but he also has the Victory suit which is just amazingly made. (I don't know if this was a thing that they did for the repro but the original from the pics I've seen had a short sleeved shirt. The repro shirt on mine is a long sleeve shirt which I actually like better.) He's a dark brunette with dark blue-green eyes, very handsome.

Someone I knew had this doll, the real one, when I was a kid and I used to play with him, but I don't quite remember him being this small. He's tiny! I remember thinking that Barbie looked a bit too old for him though. I put him with my redhead wedding repro and I still think he looks more sophisticated than the doll that's supposed to be his GF but whatever, my repros have a proper escort now and I think they're happy to see him.

I still want a real vintage one for my Color Magic. I think it would make a cute display, the 3 repro girls, the repro Ken, and then the real deal vintage Ken and Barbie in the front of the case. I'm also kind of waiting for them to make a repro of the Mod Ken. They sort of did one with the Pop Ken but he's too expensive for me. I really want an actual repro of the long haired Mod Ken to go with my TNT- 67 Redhead though. With any luck he'll have better hair than the original did. Has to be the Mod Ken though because I don't do painted head Kens. I come across one I keep it, but I also flock it. I can't stand a male doll sans hair for some reason.

Anyhow this is him...

Isn't he too cute?

Congrats on getting him! I like the flocked hair much better than painted hair.

Oh, how cool! I really like the '60s style Barbies/Kens. What a lovely present, too.

The more I look at him the more I love him just a little more. He's a perfect little plastic man, sigh. I have a very lovely repro dress in red that will look just stunning on a retro Barbie if I set her next to him. I think I am going to make my holiday e-card out of those two. I have to decide which one though and so far I just can't make up my mind. Should I use the 1961 (his year) redhead wedding Barbie, or the Enchanted Evening Barbie blonde or brunette?

I do have a real Color Magic head but I'm kind of holding off on displaying her until I have a real retro Ken to display her with and a real 60's body to put her on. She's currently on my Fashion Queen Repro's body so I can't really use that doll right now. I'm leaning towards the redhead ponytail even though it's a red dress or maybe the Brunette EE doll. I do think the idea of pairing the two 1961 dolls is kind of cute, but I am not sure about the dress and if it will clash with her hair or not. I guess I'll have to pull them out and try them all, make a decision from there. But it has to be that red dress. It will look perfect with his suit and the red vest though technically I suppose that's a day suit he's got on and the red dress is definitely evening wear.

Let your retros and repros mix in the pictures, who says they can't? If you get a good shot out of it who cares? As far as I know there's no doll police, but I do have some "doll" police :P

I'd like to see pics of the dolls no matter when they were made.

And personally most of my Kens have the new face and rooted head. I've seen a few flocked guys but me being me I'd rebody them to suit my needs.
