My first bjd was a hujoo dana. I bought one I could afford. There are some really gorgeous dolls out there, but one has to be practical. I live in South Africa, and have to consider the exchange rate when I buy. So my hujoo cost $120 excluding shipping and customs, so altogether she cost +-R1600. A lot for a doll. But she is worth it. Now that included a wig and one pair of eyes from Junky Spot. Are you still at school or are you working?

Magkelly, don't give up hope. I started off with Moxie Teenz dolls. I have Tristan and Melrose. This all happened since about July/August 2011. But I am working.

I've been buying dolls since 2005 so my collection has taken years and the sacrifice of other hobbies. The history of the larger/resin dolls started in March 2006 with the 60 bought with birthday money, the mini boy was saved for and came home Halloween 2006, the 70s came because my sister and I won the heads in a photo contest so I only had to pay for one out of Xmas, birthday, and tax return money. There were a couple of off topic resins but then it was lots of 1/6. The tiny in my signature was in 2010, if I remember correctly, and the DZ BB was in 2011 with a free event tiny.

Of course I'm grown and working and child free but I also have grown-up bills, no car of my own, no designer stuff, or other things many people can't live without.

Out of school, 4 jobs, one boss, me. I just completed a rather intensive photography internship actually. I'm starting to get work that way but mostly I'm still supporting myself by re-selling stuff out at the local flea market and by selling crafts at shows several times a year. I set up an internet store around November on Ruby Lane but it really didn't go well. I'm revamping that now and going somewhere else. Maybe trying Artfire or Etsy.

I started with the dolls a while back, mostly with Barbie, though I got into the Mel Odom Gene dolls, Madame Alex and Tonner dolls eventually. I don't buy them new very often though. I'm a resale purchaser almost exclusively and usually I'll buy the dolls as nudes to save money besides. I usually get a discounted Tonner or a similar doll a couple of times a year as a Christmas or birthday thing.

I've got my family pretty well trained, laugh. Usually before the holiday I just start looking, point them at the bargain doll I want, and just tell them to hand over their CC. They also give me TRU and Target, Amazon cards a lot. When I buy Tonner though I don't spend $150-200 I spend maybe $40-50 tops. I resell the clothes usually too. It's the only way I can afford to buy those dolls in any major way.

I've thought really hard about buying a BJD but the ones I like are usually the somewhat expensive ones. I would really love one in the 16" range at some point though. I like a more adult fashion type doll usually. I think if I am only going to have one or two I'd like a pair. Ideally I'd like a really nice girl and a really nice guy to play with. Something like the resin Jamie dolls maybe. He makes some some beautiful dolls but most of them run $300 and up and until I start making a lot more $$$ from my photo shoots I can't really afford to go there.

magkelly, with your photography skills, you might want to start offering to do dolly portraits - for cash or swaps.

Pic spam to show off Anna's new face-up, and Kratos' not so new, but still totally awesome one(both courtesy of Setsunakou!) :D

She's kneeling and leaning against him, and he's just sitting, that's why she is taller, normally he is a good 3-4cm taller than her.

With getting your first doll sometimes you gotta look back and think: "Am I gonna enjoy this? Or is this going to be a pain?" That's what I did and looked at owner pictures of Obitsu's, of all size ranges and genders and head styles, Monster High dolls and Dals to decide to get my group. With Haruhi well...I always wanted a Puki but for how much some of them go I could get my dream DZ boy instead I got my bitty bitsu and am quite happy with her. There's also the 1/4th scale of Obitsu, as well as 1/3rd and they're great posers through and through...

Or you could start out with a 1/6th army. Honestly I can't imagine not having my current gang I love all of them...Even Holly the odd mismashed hybrid I found at the Flea Market..

So just....Look around, don't give up hope and try your best.

I understand the pair thing, and I started with a Volks Dollfie Plus and Neo Goh. Couples wise I like my mini Dollzones, in my avatar, they're a nice comfortable size but then again they're in the $300 range.

There's nothing wrong with 1/6 scale. In the space that would hold that pair of 70s and perhaps the 60 I have a house full of 1/6ers They're the ones who travel and meet people more.
