3D printer doll

Postby quidam » Tue Apr 03, 2012 4:38 pm

I was browsing around etsy today and found this:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/88241847/bj ... ng-uniling

She makes a few different ones.

What do you think? I would't suppose that anyone has seen one in person yet? For those who have worked with or handled 3d printing before: how sturdy would these be?

She makes an octopus boy that I admit to being fascinated with.

Hey there! It's made of fused nylon powder, so it's going to be relatively flexible and moderately low detail. It will also have a sort of fine pebbly texture and will be a little porous. I have the same stuff as dolly chainmaille that I bought via a designer in the UK and some dolly cosplay rings that Kikichan designed for us.

visit Shapeways.com to see more, and look up Shapeways on Youtube.com to see the 3D printers in action!

Thanks for the info, dhawktx.
That explains why they seem to have a velvety look to them. Did you add any color to what you have? I'm wondering if the porousness makes the color bleed out. I noticed that the faceups and blushing she did seemed a little on the fuzzy side and I was wondering if that was why. (It could just be her style, I suppose.)

I have to admit that it's a bit impressive, even if they do lack the finer detail that I love. While I don't plan on rushing out to order one tomorrow, I'll be keeping an eye on her stuff.

I've actually been looking at that because I've been kinda curious about ordering a custom doll from there. I didn't know about the material qualities, other then some manner of plastic, so thanks for the info, so thanks dhawk. I'll have to keep in mind that stuff.

And I am also in love with that octoling.

Looks interesting... Don't know if I'd want to buy one, though.
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

You can buy them directly from her page on Shapeways, too. http://www.shapeways.com/model/375660/b ... 2-001.html http://www.shapeways.com/model/381726/d ... adcap.html http://www.shapeways.com/model/381583/f ... oling.html
Have to assemble yourself, but it saves you a little. And if you're planning on customizing, that might be the better option.
I for one would love to see someone with a better camera get one of these, trick it out and share it with the rest of us.
And I've been charmed by the Uniling, I have to say. :3

I have one..and have less fuzzy pictures of it...should I add them to this thread?
