Most Efficient BJDs/Articulated Dolls + Cost?

Barbie, Jenny, Fashion Royalty, Obitsu and 1/6 resins - basically anything 10-12inch/21-27cm or in the neighborhood.

No one in the 1/6 gang is taller than 13", the Sideshow Male, Hot Toys, and Omega Triad are the tallest. All the taller ones are a different scale that won't work.

As for Volks floppy the girls and EBs slump, the Gohs are holding together. Everyone I have with visible joints has decent movement except for the Jason Wu Fashion Royalty. The Medicom RAH is the only one to ever break, his arms fell off, and the Gameitoy has crappy wrists you can easily replace with Dragon style hands.

Sorry about all the abbreviations, Savant, but that's how I know most of these bodies. I don't even know what some of them are! lol! BBI is Blue Box International, and I think TTL is Toys City.

The EVA is Triad's Evalution body, the female companion to the EVO/Evolution. You might be able to luck up on ebay and find a EVO for cheap. Most people do not like Triad's stuff because of all their issues. If the EVO is made like the EVA then I wouldn't recommend it, because the EVAs we have are made out of cheap brittle shiny plastic and they've literally fallen apart. The ankles crumbled away on ours.

We don't have an Omega, so I don't know personally, but I've looked up some reviews on the body, and it seems to not have full shoulder articulation like most. Also, not nearly as much as pose-ability as most other bodies.

One way to find cheaper prices are to look for nude figures, instead of carded ones. There are some websites that part out boxed figures, and sometimes you can get better prices. One place is ToyAnxiety.com that I really like. They ship fast, usually next day, even if you pay with echeck through paypal.

I'm sorry I can't help on attaching the heads though. We have very few male figs (3 in total, plus 2 semi articulated statues), so I'm just going off of female body experiences and online reviews. I didn't even have many Ken dolls when I was little and had like 3 big Rubbermaid's of Barbie stuff.

My husband got me into 1/6, and he's been doing this a lot longer than I have and has more experience with modifying heads to fit on bodies. I'll have him look at your posts and see if he can help with modding that Aladdin head onto a body. We have 2 girls that had full necks molded onto their heads, and he was able to cut those off and mod them to fit bodies with necks already attached (the Tenchi Muyo girls). He'll be able to explain it much better than I can.

The main styles of heads are-
No neck, like rooted Barbie, Voks, and Obitsu heads. Some 1/6 male heads like BBI and Medicom come no neck and require a beck with a ball on top. May or may not be attached to the body.

Dragon or split neck where the head comes with a neck with a female hole and needs a neck with a male plug.

Shoulder ball for a head with an attached neck that fits on a ball in the shoulders or an adaptor neck.

You can get adaptors to put most heads on most bodies or you need a bit of air dry clay to fill in and then you paint it. My Tobey Maguire head on the Barack Sergeant body has a neck like that. Where it gets funky is rooted heads on to bodies not meant for them. It's easier to answer for specific figures.

On reviewing my posts I noticed I wasn't exactly specific, hehe, sorry. I'm going on vacation, well to see family, next week, for 10 days, and I think I'm going to have some doll parts shipped there to play with. My main goal has been doing a decent Aladdin set, as I hope to add to my etsy inventory doing doll clothes (what I pose the clothes on doesn't matter, most outfits I make would be ordered for a specific body of their choosing) and furniture, and I want some nice dolls to pose them with... plus I want to get into actual doll modding. =)

I have some disney heads of Jasmine and Aladdin, but I'm thinking of using that for something else and actually doing totally custom ones. The problem with disney is they make such large heads...

I'm thinking this for Aladdin:
Image
Volks body, 30cm

With this head:

Only problem is, it's dark brown hair, I wanted black, but they're out of those. I also didn't see any bald heads for rooting to match the body type. Any advice here? Like, would an obitsu head work?

Then for Jasmine:
Image
Obitsu body, 27cm -I want her a decent amount shorter than Aladdin, do you think I should go down to the 25cm?

With this head:

I figure this way I will get a bit of experience with both volks and obitsu. Not the $1.00 used bodies I'm used to paying for, but if I want to be serious about this I have to invest something, hehe.
With these bodies, can I reshade them with just regular acrylics? Blushing them, is that what it's called?

You guys have been very patient with my 1000 questions, thank you. =) I'd like to get your feedback before I place this order, I'm such a newb. =)

That should work. My silver haired Goh is Guy color but he has a type 1 head, it's sort of a fake orange tan http://dolfielittles.com/volks.html My Bram has a type 2 head with black hair but he's normal skin http://dolfielittles.typepad.com/.a/6a0 ... 970b-800wi

And I did a Mozenrath out of a tan EB-N http://dolfielittles.typepad.com/.a/6a0 ... 970c-800wi

Just letting you know, that those skin tones for obitsu/volks are very pale. They are not dark at all. Obitsu NS is very pink.

My Jasmine heads match the barbie AA and normal skin tones.

I agree with kittyasauras. I don't think the skin tones would match.
Here are example of a Ken on a EVO and a Omega body.

I decided I want to remake Jasmine and Aladdin from scratch, so I won't be using the doll heads I have, just starting with blank ones. So the skin color shouldn't be an issue, since I ordered the heads to match the bodies. I actually ended up doing my order a little differently from what I listed.

The head I ordered for my new Jasmine has eye holes, and no hair, so I ordered the eyes I liked, and the hair, plus rooting tools.
Here is the picture:

Then I ordered these eyes:
Image, and black hair.

I spent a lot more than I had planned, but I needed to get a bunch of tools and supplies too. I plan to blush the bodies, I found these images on flickr and was impressed:

I'm not crazy enough to imagine I can do half as a nice a job, especially on my first ones (I also don't plan to add quite as much realism to the bust haha), but, I have to start somewhere. =)

Thanks again for all the info guys, it was a big help for me when placing my first order. If I'm not too embarrassed by my first dolls I can post them in this forum.

Can you root a headcap? I don't think I've heard of that being done before, although I guess it would be workable. Most people use wigs for eyehole heads. Wouldn't you also have to root the head itself, in order to get a realistic hairline? That might make putting eyes in and out a lot harder than it would otherwise be. Unless you don't plan on removing the headcap again once the eyes are in, in which case it wouldn't matter.

I don't work much with 1/6 scale. Someone with more experience in rooting could probably give you better info.

Both Pandor and I have rooted that head before. So you can do it.
