Pt 2: Reversing Magnets? Freezing Didn't Work

You did WHAT? WHERE?? HOW??? Share the knowledge or explain once again why we use chalk pastels and not oils.

First attempt didn't work ..... I'm freezing both of the ears and the head back and trying again tomorrow. Plus, my husband said he will bring a Rare Earth magnet home from work to see if that helps.

I wonder if they hot-glued the wretched things in? If so the only way to get them out is to pry them out.

Or very carefully dunk them in simmering water for about thirty seconds. I found out the hard way that ResinSoul hot-glues magnets in horns, when my friends and I were dying Vespera's, and a set of Ming horns.

I'm at a loss . . . nothing is working. My husband thinks that the magnets in the doll are rare earth themselves because of how strong they are. I am beginning to think my only hope is to somehow find a pukisha headback on the MP,

OK at this point, you are at the point of having to find new ears or new headbacks, so you might as well try this.

Put the ear or headback, whichever you think is most replaceable, in a vice with a towel around the jaws. Stand by with your rare earth magnet or steel in some sort of insulated holder. Get a soldering iron. Touch it to the magnet you are trying to unglue until it is just as hot, and keep wiggling to see if the glue is loosened. When it starts to loosen, get your steel/magnet in there and pull it out.

Damn things have GOT to be hotglued in there, and this is the only way I know of to melt the glue.

Ok, this is the OMG brute force method. Do this on the ears, they are the most easily replaced. Use a dental tool. Slide the tool between the magnet and the resin on the fattest side and get the tool under the magnet and pry it up. This is how Gerald does it. He says it's a bitch of a job. You can get dental picks at hobby stores in the sculpting area and also from your dentist. Gerald says don't use an X-acto knife, they break too easily. When I glue the magnets in, I like to let them connect to the headback and them mark them with a sharpie. That way I know to glue them in with the mark to the inside. And I double check and do one at a time. I tend to mix up rights and lefts otherwise.

Gulp! And I thought my friend's suggestion of a dremel was hard-core! LOL

One of my local doll friends has a couple puki-pukis that have magnets in their head, but no magic parts, so I might wait until the 21st to see which set of magnets are actually in wrong. Heck - maybe she'd be will to trade if it's the head back like I think. Still, I think I'm going to take the seller up on her offer of a refund for the magic parts ....

I cannot believe I did not think of this.

Go to the hobby store. Get some of that flexible mold making material. Make a mold of the ears. Send it to Zirc and Gerald and have him cast you some new ears.

If you ever resell the little darlin', resell it with the original ears and the caveat that the magnets are reversed.

That could work ... providing Gerald doesn't mind recasting from a company's item.

That's for you guys to work out, but given that you HAVE the original ears, you are not asking him to recast for resale, and you won't resell the recast ears, it strikes me as being pretty much the same as ripping an MP3 of a song you own on CD to put on your iPod.

For that matter for a little more you could pick up some Apoxie and shove it into the mold yourself. Not the same as resin but then you aren't asking someone else to do it for you.
