Some parents prefer their younger kids to play with only wholesome (as defined by the parent) toys that don't delve in themes considered too mature for them.

I wasn't allowed to have Jem dolls because their had colored hair. I grew up with an obsession over forbidden blue hair. I'm serious, telling a kid they can't have something makes their young minds ache for it all the more. I colored my red and blue last year. I told my Mom, jokingly of course, that she should have let me have a Jem doll and I could have lived vicariously through my dolls. I did "borrow" blue markers and color Barbie's hair but it didn't turn out to be a good job :-p

Wow. This all sounds so... old-fashioned..? I don't think Dutch people would ever get worked up over things like witchcraft or bright coloured hair O.o

It may mostly just be Americans. I don't know why. Our mass majority gets their undies in a bunch over the simplest things. Things that shouldn't even be important, they are twisted in a wad over. lol

Americans are odd ducks. We're a dominant country for such a young nation, but we have the strangest hangups. For a nation built on tolerance and freedom, we're very biased in some ways towards social homogenization.

As one of the 'older' people here, I can only say that it takes all kinds to make a world. I'm sure some parents will deny their kids these dolls for religious reasons. I don't agree with their reasoning, but it's their choice to raise their children as they see fit.

I'm not that kind of parent. My son had both Barbie and Ken. Ken in his cop uniform would pull over Barbie for speeding in her pink Corvette. Then he'd ask her over for a bbq. My boy has grown up in to a nice young man. Having dolls and trucks and beanies and legos hasn't made him any different than any other kid on the block.

I work at a library. I can't tell you how many times I've had to bite my lip to stop laughing at some parent's face when they say no to a Harry Potter book for their kid and the kid says they've already read them all.

And even tho I don't generally care for Bratz (sorry, the lips just creep me out!) I could end up with a couple of these because I think they look neat. The cranky old lady in me loves to go against the popular opinion anyway.
Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

 That's awesome.
The 4-year old boys in my class play with Barbie dolls too, dressing them up and stuff, not being bothered in the slightest by any prejudice whatsoever. And we don't even have any Kens in school, it's just a pink bunch of Barbie girls :P

I'd almost say MGA is hoping for controversy. 'Glam gets wicked'? Really? Most pop-cultural representations of witches have them as neutral to positive. MGA using a negative term can only be hoping to stir things up.

It's JMO, but if I were a witch I would not be happy about the old stereotypes getting kicked up again.

As far as the "Glam gets wicked" slogan, I think they're playing off of the popularity of Wicked the musical there.

Witch has a pretty broad definition that I could fall under according to some people. Most people take my pentacle as a Star of David. I've just worn it for so long it's a part of me.

So most of the witch dolls have green skin, before it was witches the color was that of the earth and the Green Man. I'd be more upset if she was dressed like a slut, being aimed at young children, and her entire life was devoted to how she looked instead of how she behaved and so on. At least Barbie was an astronaut.

They might complain but they complained about regular Bratz too. Monster High is MASSIVELY popular and MGA is determined to grab a piece of that pie. Plus, they did lines like Pretty n Punk and Masquerade before so if they got away with it in the past and MH is getting away with "spookiness" now, then probably figure they'll be fine. Doll lines can get away with a lot more now. 1998's Butterfly Barbie had,OMIGOSH, a tattoo, and that got whined about. Now there's a number of dolls with tattoos that have come out and it doesn't seem to be the big rage point it was.
