Hmm.... maybe we got a lot of algea because it was in full sun and my mother fed the fish too much. We had a LOT of fish in that little space hehe
Feeding the fish will do it. A friend who had a pond before I put mine in told me not to feed the fish unless I absolutely had to. He has a smaller pond than me and a bunch of fish, including a koi (very jealous). The most they ever do is pull out waterlilies when they start to choke the pond.
