If anyone is interested, here's a link to the CDC's website about qualifications for free/low cost screenings:

They might ask if it was quick because they didn't want her to suffer.

I'm glad to hear your friends still care.

again sorry Happyknot, you could tell those busybodies that you just can't talk about it right now. That could get you out of a long sad story without seeming rude.

And thanks for the concern and reminder... it's been a while since I had a check up.

asking if it was quick is a pretty standard question from my experience. its kind of a way of seeing how you're grieving, with a long period you might have had time to grieve and go thru the process before she died, if it was quick, you might not have had the time to process it and then they can adjust their response to what they feel you need.

When she finally did get checked out due to pneumonia they had found stage 4 ovarian cancer already running rampant - meaning it had spread to her other organs including her brain. They couldn't do much at this stage but if they had caught it earlier they could have. She was able to live for 3 years after that but it just got progressively worse and her suffering was immense.

She was only 53.

My best friend was only 46 when they found she had stage 3 ovarian cancer....and she only lived 9 months after that :( Even though she knew it ran in her family she never went to get checked :( I understand why people ask that "was it quick" question, but you know I think that after what I watched - it really doesn't matter with cancer how long someone suffered, it is always terrible :(

Oh I'm quite late, but happyknot, I am so sorry for your big loss. My condolences. It must have been horrible to see your mother suffer like that for such a long time. *hugs*

Cancer is insidious. Thankfully, it doesn't run too deep in my family. My paternal grandfather and my maternal grandmother are the closest to me, and they died of cancers related to smoking.

I was only 6 when my granddad passed away, and barely knew my grandmother. As I understand it, my grandmother was told she had very advanced stage 4 esophageal cancer and wasn't given more than a few months. For the first time in her life she insisted on seeing her eldest child, my mom. My grandfather drove her down from Indianapolis. She made it to the front door of my parents' home.

And then some bastard at the hospital stole her wedding set .....

Adding my sympathies as well, happyknot and Greyhaunt. Ovarian cancer has touched my family as well, and it's a shame that it so often goes unnoticed until it's too late. *hugs*

Thankfully my family has been here for my brother and I and it's making the transition easier.
You guys have also been a help and it is comfort but also a shame that some of you have experienced this in your family or your friends. Thank you.

We're moving forward now and if things go smoothly there are better opportunities awaiting us within the next month.
So hopefully you'll be seeing me posting in the REJOICE thread more often.

Again thank you all. Seriously. You've been more supportive than some people in my local life.
